JOB OVERVIEW - The Managing Editor for Digital Communications leads daily editorial planning and production for UCSF.edu, working with a multidisciplinary team to execute a content strategy across digital platforms. The successful candidate is an experienced digital storyteller, producing works informed by industry best practices and a strong understanding of analytics. Working under the direction of the Executive Director of Digital Communications, the Managing Editor will oversee aspects of UCSF editorial production, including but not limited to the following: - Manage and maintain the University Relations editorial calendar, ensuring a consistent and balanced mix of stories published to UCSF.edu - Provide expertise and feedback on University Relations’ evolving digital content strategy - Oversee daily production on all University Relations-managed web properties – our external-facing UCSF News Center, internal-facing Inside UCSF, and the Chancellor’s Website – ensuring that content contributors meet their deadlines and deliver high-quality content - Conceptualize and implement compelling multimedia feature story projects that exemplify the UCSF brand, often leading content brainstorming meetings - Supervise the editorial work of staff and freelance writers, photographers, videographers and designers - Edit stories to ensure an engaging voice, as well as strategic and factual accuracy - Write copy as needed to round out the UCSF news report - Incorporate learnings from web and social media analytics and demonstrate improved user experience and story engagement over time - Adhere to and enforce best practices of Search Engine Optimization. In addition to UCSF.edu duties, the Managing Editor also supports projects for the University, advising and contributing to major UCSF campaigns, crisis communications and University initiatives.

Ideal Candidate - This job requires an ability to maintain the highest standards of accuracy and precision under daily deadline pressure, excellent judgment, ingenuity, persistence, an ability to actively participate in a highly collaborative team environment, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills. - The Managing Editor must keep abreast of emerging and state-of-the-art digital storytelling techniques, make recommendations for improvements and be able to coach colleagues on best practices. - S/he must be proficient in HTML/CSS and ideally has experience working with content management systems such as Drupal. - The position is reporting to this role will be the Web Writer. S/he will ensure that high quality work is completed within budget and time constraints and assure accountability and stewardship of campus resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives. S/he sets performance expectations, evaluates results, provides guidance and direction on complex communications issues. - The Managing Editor will function as advisor to the Digital Communications team, Brand Communications team and University Relations Leadership Team. - S/he recommends changes to department policies and practices. - Identifies risks and responds accordingly. Provides priority setting and workflow analysis. - This role analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management in defined areas) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. - S/he exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Note: Fingerprinting and background check required. Preferred Qualifications - Knowledge about science, higher education and health care, including patient privacy rules - Experience in complex, decentralized organizations such as an academic medical institution or major research university - Experience in leveraging social marketing to promote web content - Experience in multimedia storytelling for a digital audience, with proven results in audience engagement
