Summary
The Digital Director of Travel + Leisure is the linchpin of the brand’s growth plan, a member of the senior leadership team who is passionate about unlocking the power of the brand and extending its business. The role reports to T+L’s Editor but is a hybrid one, encompassing oversight of editorial content creation across media types as well as the development and execution of digital strategy in all its components, including content strategy, mobile strategy, distribution and syndication strategy, influencer and community strategy, commerce initiatives, and partnerships and acquisitions. S/he partners with colleagues at both the brand and corporate levels—with editors, T+L’s general manager, audience development, product, consumer marketing, sales and marketing, and counterparts at sister Time Inc brands—taking ownership of digital KPIs and focusing on driving growth in both audience and revenue. Travel is an exciting category, one that touches a wide variety of subjects from food and design and style and pop culture to current events and politics and economics; the ideal Digital Director need not have any particular background in the category but will understand how to take news developments and present them with a travel lens to build audience.
Responsibilities
* Develop and execute a strategy for rapid audience growth, partnering with the editor and general manager to focus activities and deploy resources to drive towards aggressive targets * Immerse yourself in analytics to continually identify new areas of opportunity and improvement and execute against those learnings * Understand the customer journey to identify new business opportunities around extending our relationship with our users, including commerce and paid content * Manage and mentor a team of digital editors, audience engagement editors, photo editors, and producers in efficient, high velocity daily publishing * Inspire and empower a team of recently hybridized print/digital editors, partnering with executive editor to focus efforts and transfer knowledge and skills on best practices in digital content creation * Define the brand’s digital brand identity and voice and lead execution of it across platforms * Assess and (if needed) reboot strategies in social, newsletters, and syndication and lead execution * Identify opportunities for us to partner with sister Time Inc brands and work with counterparts across the organization to bring plans to fruition * Develop brand video strategy and partner with internal and external specialists on execution * Develop editorial content opportunities that can be effectively leveraged to drive business, partnering with sales and marketing to develop specific plans and execute them * Identify and prioritize resource needs and partner with general manager to secure and deploy * Manage brand’s digital P&L, effectively and efficiently utilizing funds and ensuring all activities remain within budget * Identify new partners or potential acquisitions for T+L, partnering with general manager to evaluate and advance opportunities * Represent T+L’s digital brand and business efforts at events and in media
Ideal Candidate
* 7+ years of leadership experience in digital, preferably in media or other content-led environments * Established track record of developing growth strategies and leading digital audience growth via effective content creation * Fluency with all digital tools, including CMS (T+L is on a Drupal-based platform) and social publishing * Fluency with analytics platforms, including Omniture, ChartBeat, etc., and deep experience in establishing and analyzing performance metrics * Thorough knowledge of current best practices in social, SEO, mobile, and video, and experience translating that knowledge into action * Full understanding of digital advertising, ad products, and marketplace trends, including viewability and native advertising * Collaborative and communicative work style * A passion for what you do—your enthusiasm is contagious * A desire to mentor and train others * Relentless drive for success, and a knack for inspiring others to contribute and share in it * An understanding of the T+L brand and an interest in travel * Experience in fast-pasted categories like news or entertainment a plus
