Summary
The company seeks an individual with strategic human resources experience leading a high-performing culture and creating a positive, accountability-based work environment within a complex/large company. The successful candidate will have the ability to establish credibility at all levels of the organization, a strong leadership profile, exceptional communication skills, and an effective adaptive style across multiple stakeholder groups. Strong HR expertise and notable business experience are highly important. Of critical importance will be the focus on Bank Values (Integrity, Respect, Service, Collaboration, Inclusion, Stewardship) and Ethics driving the business model.
Responsibilities
The Chief Human Resources Officer for the Americas (CHRO) will report to Stephen Cummings, President and Chief Executive Officer, MUFG Americas Holdings Corporation, MUFG Union Bank, N.A. and will have a secondary reporting line to the Executive Chairman, MUFG Americas Holdings Corporation, MUFG Union Bank, N.A. and Regional Executive for the Americas, Kanetsugu Mike, as well as a matrix reporting line to the Global Head of HR Keiichi Hotta. As a member of the Executive Committee for the Americas, the CHRO will be an integral part of the senior leadership team and will work with that group to unite and align human capital strategies and goals that support the bank’s business strategies and goals. The CHRO will have full responsibility for all aspects of the human resources function, including Talent Acquisition & Staffing, HR Client Services (HR Business Partners & Employee Relations), Organization Development, Inclusion & Diversity, Total Rewards, HR Shared Services, HR Business Management, HR Communications, and HR Home Staff Liaison. **Key Reporting Relationships:** This position reports to Stephen Cummings, President and Chief Executive. Direct Reports: Eight (8) key direct reports (approximately 235 total headcount), including the following Functional Reports: Regional Head of HR for Latin America and Head of HR for Canada. **Major Responsibilities:** * Act as a trusted confidant to the CEO, senior management, and the board of directors. Viewed as a credible and value-added member of the bank’s senior leadership team. * Serve as a Policy Making Officer and as a member of the Executive Committee for the Americas, the highest decision making body for the bank chaired by the CEO. * Advise, guide, and instruct on material matters to ensure bank-wide safety and soundness and compliance with HR governance. * Evolve the Americas HR organization and maintain its profile, presence, and delivery model as a strategic business operating function. * Provide leadership and management to the America’s HR organization and create a positive, productive, and motivating work environment. * Partner with senior leaders and make recommendations to ensure that HR programs are aligned with the business strategy and drive a high performance culture. * Ensure the Americas HR organization is aligned to appropriately support and influence regional and global HR strategy and initiatives; providing effective leadership and guidance to regional and global HR colleagues. * Ensure that all functional areas of HR are optimized and aligned with current and future business strategies, objectives, and legal/regulatory requirements. * Continually review, benchmark, and evolve all HR functions to effectively manage costs and legal/regulatory compliance. * Leadership oversight of employee relations including all employment policies, disciplinary actions, terminations, performance management, and employment litigation. * Set strategy for succession planning and related training and developmental activities, overseeing effectiveness of performance management and leadership development programs; ensuring their linkage to the bank’s strategies and objectives, managerial effectiveness, and employee engagement; and supportive of Enhanced Prudential Standards. * Champion and further advance the bank’s reputation and practices as an Inclusion and Diversity leader. * Ensure the bank’s culture and decision making are aligned with the bank’s values and core competencies. * Establish and accountability for the annual HR budget.
Ideal Candidate
The CHRO will provide counsel to the bank's management team and its Board of Directors, in the form of expert advice and judgment on technical human resource issues, as well as on sensitive human capital, developmental and organizational issues. This individual needs to have the right people values, ethics, and the highest integrity to handle complex personnel issues along with a bottom-line orientation, focusing on business strategy, budgeting, and effective cost management of the bank's human capital. The CHRO must also have exceptional interpersonal and team building skills and be able to effectively represent the company both internally and externally. This role also includes being an active/pro-active member of the Global HR Leadership Team and spearheading global initiatives across the region and sharing best practices with other regions. The successful candidate will have strengths in both strategic human resources thinking and operational excellence and be one of the key caretakers of the company’s high performance, values-driven culture. * Senior human resources executive with extensive business and human resources experience in a growth environment with substantial organizational change including company-wide human capital expense management. * Demonstrated success in building and leading a best-in-class human resources organization, preferably having worked in a global banking organization (Wholesale Banking and Retail Banking) recognized as a leader in human capital programs and practices. * Demonstrated experience creating a high performance and values-based culture resulting in a highly engaged and productive workforce. * Recognized both as a strategic and tactical business partner with a highly visible executive presence and hands-on management style. * Functional center of excellence experience in compensation and benefits, talent/succession management, organizational development, HR technology/infrastructure, and/or HR shared services. * Global business and/or HR experience, preferably including the Americas and Japan. * Experience with mergers and acquisitions including HR integration work (e.g., outsourcing, offshoring, lower cost geography, etc.). * Demonstrated business acumen and a strong track record of adding business value and working successfully with business unit leaders in a client focused, highly competitive, and rapidly changing environment. * Bachelor’s degree is required; MBA strongly preferred.
