About IBM
IBM is a global technology and innovation company headquartered in Armonk, NY. It is the largest technology and consulting employer in the world, with more than 400,000 employees serving clients in 170 countries.
Summary
IBM Research is building a new team to drive architecture and technologies for cloud infrastructure and data centers. The scale and variety of next-generation cloud applications will pose many challenges in the design of systems infrastructure (both hardware and software), data center networking, management frame-works, and data center infrastructure optimization. These challenges need to be addressed while continuing to improve service/application availability and operational efficiency with respect compute resources, energy, and human resources. The team will push the boundaries of conventional cloud designs to provide application builders with a broader range of technologies and system capabilities and to help reduce the development time and effort needed to create new services and applications. It will actively collaborate with other research teams and IBM units to understand characteristics of next-generation cloud applications particularly in the areas of deep learning/cognitive computing, big data analytics, mobile services, Internet of Things, and social computing and to explore emerging memory, interconnect, and acceleration technologies for cloud applications. Large-scale prototyping and experimental cloud test-beds will be leveraged for analyzing and validating the research ideas.
Responsibilities
A key focus for the team would be building of a cloud infrastructure that enables —assembling a wide range of IT resources together as a single system rather than merely providing a menu of available system configurations. —integration with industry-standard ecosystems, tools and development process —extensive monitoring and debug capabilities to accelerate development and tuning —the ability to use new, often experimental, technologies in solution stacks —isolation of workloads to guarantee behavior and provide protection
