Summary
Hitachi America, Ltd. (www.hitachi-america.us) has an opening for a Researcher in Big Data solution technologies in our newly established Big Data Laboratory in Silicon Valley. The mission of this laboratory is to help create new solution businesses in big data analytics by doing PoC (Proof of Concept) activities. Hitachi America R&D already has an IT research laboratory, which mainly develops platform differentiated business, such as of storage array products and storage solutions. The Big Data Laboratory extends the scope of our research to contribute further to the realization of Hitachi’s vision of “Social Innovation.” The laboratory will focus on technology innovation, technical marketing and business development for novel big data solutions, leveraging Hitachi’s technologies, reinforcing Hitachi’s messaging around big data, and establishing Hitachi as a leader in big data.
Responsibilities
* Exploring technologies for the collection, management, and analysis of large amounts of data, as well as applications of big data and advanced analytics related to social infrastructure issues. * Understanding the possible competitive opportunities and threats arising from new technologies or new business models, characterizing their impact on the business units in Hitachi Group, and proposing possible technical development actions to enhance their platform products and solutions. * Designing solutions that can address the opportunities or threats mentioned above, and identifying the technical issues to be resolved in creating solutions that are feasible in terms of functionality and performance. * Prototyping the solutions by developing the necessary software that solves the technical issues and demonstrates the value of the solution to targeted users. * Preparing and submitting patents on the technical solutions to provide competitive advantage and protect Hitachis IP; and, after obtaining appropriate protection, publishing technical results in leading venues to establish Hitachi as a leader in big data and advanced analytics. * Planning, preparing and executing proof-of-concepts of the solution using the prototype and refining the solution based on external feedback. Necessary partnerships, such as with Cloud Computing service providers, leading edge innovators, subject matter experts, and/joint research with academia or research institutes, should be considered, planned, negotiated, and established in time. * Once the proof-of-concept has been successful, the next step will be to make a proposal to business units to commercialize the solution, aligned with current and/or future product lines of Hitachi Group companies.
Ideal Candidate
* Masters or Ph. D degree in Computer Science or related field * 5 or more years of experience: * Working as a researcher designing, prototyping, and building Big Data/Advanced Analytics solutions. Should include experience in identifying and solving technical issues, and performing quantitative evaluations and comparisons of technologies in in terms of performance, reliability, resource consumption, usability, and functionality, * Knowledge of HTTP, HTML, XML, RDBMS, Java/C , Hadoop, and analytics tools and technologies. * Preparing and making technical presentations in English * Strong awareness of the industry; including knowledge of the target user segments and the market position of the solution to effectively compete with similar solutions. * Knowledge of related research in the industry and the individuals leading these projects. * Strong willingness to discover social infrastructure related issues in various regions and to solve them with Big Data/Analytics solutions. * Ability to collaborate successfully with R&D co-workers, Hitachi group company customers, partners, engineers, and business units in Hitachi with the goal of commercializing the proposed solution. * Ability to efficiently write technical documents; including patent applications, presentations, papers, and reports.
