Responsibilities
- Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, the Marketing Manager will assist with planning and executing the marketing, creative and editorial activities at Spelman College. - The purpose of the position is to support the director in executing the College’s brand strategy by creating compelling marketing materials and ensuring brand consistency and accuracy across departments and divisions. - In collaboration with campus partners, writers, editors and communications professionals, the Marketing Manager will manage and contribute to the production of College marketing vehicles, including academic, admissions, presidential and institutional advancement materials. - Maximize marketing opportunities through collaboration with campus and communications partners to develop and execute integrated plans; - Work proactively with clients and vendors inside and outside the College to identify and address marketing and communications needs and opportunities; - Assist with introducing/reinforcing the Spelman brand to the internal community and communicating the brand promises throughout the campus; - Aggressively investigate and take advantage of emerging technologies and new trends in marketing, as well as utilize established communications tools/vehicles while adhering to the College’s brand guidelines; - Manage the development and production of College publications, including researching and writing articles, editing and proofing, photography, videography, graphic design and printing; - Lead production for Inside Spelman, The Spelman Messenger andtheReport on Philanthropy; - Coordinate and provide editorial services around the development, creation and implementation of special projects and collaterals requested by campus divisions, departments, programs and initiatives; - Maintain a positive image and reputation for the College by communicating about programs, accomplishments, positions and/or points of view to internal and external audiences; - Assist with the coordination of special events/activities and represent the College in the absence of the director; - Work with graphic designers, photographers, videographers, web developers, copywriters, editors and vendors to enhance publications, media relations, digital communications, marketing, branding and other strategic communications.
Ideal Candidate
- Bachelor’s degree required. A minimum of four years of direct experience in marketing, print production, writing, editing or other communication functions, as well as the ability to write and edit on deadline is required. A background in higher education is preferred though not necessary. - This position requires problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions and recommendations that involve the production of marketing collateral and raising the visibility of the College through various communication activities; identifying and guiding the work of appropriate vendors (writers, editors, designers, photographers and videographers); working with campus partners to produce collateral that stays within their budgets and promotes their initiatives while ensuring Spelman brand consistency; and collaborating with communications colleagues to develop, execute and maximize marketing plans. - The position requires exceptional oral and written communication skills and highly developed analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The incumbent must have a professional demeanor and the ability to apply creative vision, as well as a solid knowledge and understanding of the editorial, publishing, public relations and marketing processes. Independent judgment is necessary to plan, prioritize and organize a diversified workload with attention to detail. Work requires fact-finding and compilation skills, plus ability to perform a variety of tasks simultaneously, most times with little supervision. - Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills and the ability to work well in a team environment are essential as the position will interact with many departments and divisions, including administrative and faculty-led groups. The Marketing Manager must be able to speak effectively before groups of employees, students, alumnae, other College constituents and the public. - The position requires the ability to execute marketing through emerging publishing tools/vehicles, as well as advanced level computer skills using the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point). Familiarity with social media tools/vehicles is preferred, as is experience with Google analytics, email systems and a variety of electronic communication tools. Must be able to generate spreadsheets, graphs, and Power Point presentations. Incumbent must have outstanding proofing and editing skills in addition to being able to read, analyze, and interpret documents, and develop articles for publication, routine reports, procedure manuals and business correspondence (memos, letters and emails).
