Summary
The American Medical Association (AMA), the nation’s largest professional Association of physicians, has a dynamic opportunity for the right individual. As part of the AMA’s Health Finance team, the Staff Accountant III will perform all accounting functions associated with the American Medical Association's government and private grants; Ensure that all grant proposals and awards comply with government rules and regulations as well as AMA internal policies; Perform other accounting related functions.
Responsibilities
* Record grants expenses and recognize revenue in accordance with GAAP. Apply appropriate indirect rates and record indirect revenues. Review and test monthly grant expenses for proper classification. Ensure billing is timely and complete. Develop procedures and controls to insure timely and accurate financial closings. Ensure all grant awards are in compliance with all government rules and regulations. Provide monthly and annual reports related to grant activities for management. * Review all grant applications to ensure that proposed budgets are appropriate, documented and are in compliance with AMA financial policies and procedures. Ensure all grant proposals are in compliance with all government rules and regulations. Present final grant proposals, contracts and awards for Director approval. * Ensure that timely and accurate financial reports are filed with the appropriate agency or foundation. Coordinates with Grant Manager to ensure that all outstanding issues are resolved. * Record and reconcile monthly activity for plan healthcare costs, corporate leases and selected accrued expenses. Ensure that third party documentation supports all month end accruals. * Analyze monthly fringe benefit and occupancy costs. Ensure consistent methodology is used for allocations. Analyze cost trends for the forecast and annual budget. Review and adjust incurred but not reported (IBNR) and flexible spending account (FSA) liability accounts.
Ideal Candidate
* Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or relevant degree * Minimum of 3 to 5 years of professional experience, preferably with an emphasis in grants or general accounting activities * Current knowledge of accounting literature and industry or public accounting experience * Strong personal computer literacy required. Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) and financial software packages including Lawson and Essbase * Strong planning and organizing skills required. Must meet commitments and deadlines * Self-starter with the ability to work independently * Self-motivated individual with the ability to deal effectively with numerous activities simultaneously * Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with all levels of staff and management
