Summary
University Relations is the lead marketing and strategic communication group for UNCG. The department has responsibility for building the University’s reputation/brand through a variety of tactics ranging from marketing communications and advertising, public relations, digital and social media, and campus communications. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor of University Relations, the Associate Director of Media Relations (AD) will work closely with associate members of the University’s academic and administrative leadership to successfully lead, develop, and execute a university-wide media relations plan that focuses on elevating the university’s presence locally, regionally, and nationally. The AD will work closely with local, regional and national media on a daily basis to promote stories to increase awareness. The AD must be comfortable in all media and public relation areas.
Responsibilities
- Informing local and national audiences as well as the campus community about noteworthy university-related accolades and accomplishments. - Working with the news media to develop and pitch stories for print, broadcast and online outlets, highlighting UNCG’s outstanding faculty, students, staff, learning environment, research and more. - Providing campus constituents with creative concepts, develop consensus, mediate problems, manage crises, track trends, and interpret issues as they relate to various publics and the university. - Assuming a leadership role in advancing the University’s mission to serve all university divisions, departments, programs and related units by providing media relations support for academic programs, events, and other special assignments. - Pitching features and news stories to assignment editors. - Writing and feature articles. - Supervise a team of writers and social media coordinator. - Develop communication plans. - Execute crisis communication plan.
Ideal Candidate
- Five (5) to seven (7) years of demonstrated experience working with print and electronic media - Team management experience with a proven track record of mentoring talent - Strong track record in driving proactive media relations efforts to secure coverage - Experience elevating team performance and managing change - Extensive experience serving as media relations advisor to senior-level executives - Proven ability to develop and communicate key messages - A thorough understanding of broadcast, print and digital media - Experience working in a large, complex organizations, with proven ability to balance the needs of multiple stakeholders - Advanced writing, editing and presentation skills, with ability to write for senior administrators - Strong attention to detail, ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment - Extensive media measurement experience, quantifying ROI - Extensive experience developing relationships with key community stakeholders and representing organizations in the local community - Marketing communication, internal communication, executive communication, and digital and social media experience a significant plus - Second language a plus - Public- and private-sector experience preferred with strong agency and higher education background preferred. - Candidates without media relations, public relations or supervisory experience will not be considered. This position is similar to a News Director position.
