Summary
The Director, Sales and Marketing – SW Region will be responsible to plan, develop and implement sales and marketing programs designed for the Southern California market in a manner that secures and maintains cargo volume at levels necessary to achieve corporate growth and profitability objectives. This position will coordinate and manage activities that establish and promote a favorable business climate in the Southern California region. Develop political and community relationships to promote and maintain Matson Navigation Company’s image and brand in the community in order to improve its profit capabilities. This position will implement Matson’s mainland Household Goods strategy through the management and direction of the Manager, National Household Goods, who reports to the Director, Sales and Marketing, SW Region. This position will also implement Matson’s mainland Refrigerated Services strategy through the management and direction of the Manager, National Refrigerated Services, who reports to the Director, Sales and Marketing, SW Region.
Responsibilities
**Nature and Scope** Matson’s Southern California facility is located in Long Beach. Matson activities have a significant impact on public, political and maritime interests in the area. Primary responsibility is to plan and implement regional sales and marketing strategies in order to meet corporate goals and objectives for Hawaii, Guam , Alaska and the South Pacific services. Southern California area of coverage reaches from the Mexican border to Fresno in the north and New Mexico in the east. Phoenix, Las Vegas, Bakersfield, San Diego all require travel for sales coverage. Responsibilities of the Manager, National Household Goods will occasionally include nationwide travel. Responsibilities for representatives covering Automobile Manufacturers will also occasionally include nationwide travel. The incumbent develops and implements programs and measures, which stimulate a favorable public and business climate conducive to the continuation and improvement of profitable operations. In order to accomplish this, the incumbent must be familiar with all aspects of Matson’s operations, company plan, policies and procedures, market developments, competitive activities, labor agreements, regulatory requirements and relevant legislative issues. The Director, Sales and Marketing, SW Region is the senior Matson executive in Southern California and as such fills an important advisory role with all departments. This position reports to the Vice President, Sales, U. S. Mainland, as do the Sales Directors covering Oakland, Pacific Northwest and the Eastern Area. **Specific Accountabilities** * Develop, plan, implement and manage regional sales activities to produce maximum customer support and revenue. * Communicate and cooperate with other functional units within Matson to solve operating and service problems and to enhance Matson’s service offerings. * Effectively represent Matson’s interests in contacts with customers, the public, government and legislative leaders to promote favorable relationships, support and acceptance of the Company’s long and short-range plans and objectives. * Motivate, train and maintain a knowledgeable and highly responsive sales organization to ensure achievement of company goals and objectives. * Keep the Vice President, Sales, U.S. Mainland apprised of all changing market, competitive, local and legislative situations. * Participate as a member of the Southern California PMSA Steering Committee and other maritime and community related boards to enhance Matson’s visibility and involvement in Southern California.
Ideal Candidate
* Degree in business administration or related field preferred. * A comprehensive understanding of the market is required. This includes in depth knowledge of shippers, potential shippers, consignees and their varied distribution patterns and needs. * Complete understanding of Matson’s total service is necessary to fully match customer needs with Matson capabilities. * Must be able to travel 10-20%
