Front End Web Developers at athenahealth work in cross-functional scrum teams to conceive of and implement user interface designs for user testing and production release. This person participates in all phases of the design and development process to explore new user interface paradigms, create user interface components, and execute best practices for maintainable code.

**30% [primary function] - Provide implementation guidance to scrum team mates.** * Ensure that designers and developers are aware of the design system standards. * Have the ability to deliver production ready UI code to development teams when necessary. * Regularly audit user interfaces for design consistency. * Champion user interfaces builds that are user accessible, cross-browser, and cross-platform. * User interface component technical design including API specification and requirements gathering. **40% - Collaborate with design, research, and development functions to prototype concepts for new user interfaces.** * Understand the requirements of concepts and select the most appropriate method of execution to demonstrate the design for testing or further refinement. * Balance technically sound methodology with expediency; manage scope; communicate progress with the team. * Participate in refining the story and tests in usability trials to ensure research questions are answered unambiguously. **30% - Make contributions to, and maintain, the product design system.** * Create documentation that informs designers and developers about the best practices for creating UIs. * Create sample source demonstrating how to use the product’s UI components. * Contribute to the design and refinement of elements in the design system. * Maintain awareness of trends in UI development at athenahealth and in the industry at large.

* BA/BS required. Focus in Computer Science, Human Computer Interaction, Interaction Design preferred, or equivalent industry experience * 2-4 years of experience developing web user interfaces * Ability to code high-fidelity prototypes with HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript that can be used by developers in production code * jQuery, Sass (or Less), Foundation (or Bootstrap) * Experience organizing UI code using JavaScript MVC, MVVM, or component frameworks such as Backbone, Angular, Vue, React, Polymer, Require * Ability to create data models for views * Desktop and mobile web cross-browser / cross-platform implementation experience * Version control experience (Perforce or Git) * Experience writing technical documentation (code comments, API docs, design guides) * Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Sketch or equivalent bitmap/vector design packages preferable **Behaviors & Abilities Required:** * Prioritize creating user interfaces that are elegant to behold for the user and elegant to maintain for the engineering team. * Strong ability to explain interaction designs to developers, business, designers, and other stakeholders using audience appropriate methods. * Work with the engineering team overcome UI technical hurdles to achieve the best user facing solution. * Make sound judgments about when to stay true to technology standards and when to deviate. * Be an advocate for user centered design
