The Alzheimer’s Association works on a global, national and local level to enhance care and support for all those affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementias. We are here to help. We have local chapters across the nation, providing services within each community. We provide caregivers and families with comprehensive online resources and information through our Alzheimer's and Dementia Caregiver Center, which features sections on early-stage, middle-stage and late-stage caregiving.
Summary
The primary responsibility of the public affairs coordinator is to effectively promote the public policy, program and development efforts of the Chapter through the establishment of 1) a volunteer advocacy force to achieve state and national public policy goals, 2) a communication infrastructure and 3) partnerships and relationships with media outlets, advocates, volunteers and legislators. The goal is to better the lives of individuals and families living with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias.
Responsibilities
* Serve as lead staff and liaison to the Chapter's Public Policy Committee in developing and executing appropriate strategies to achieve the Alzheimer's Association's advocacy goals * Schedule and conduct meetings with state and federal legislators regarding issues pertinent to Alzheimer's disease or other dementias * Recruit, train and coordinate a network of advocates and ambassadors to achieve state and national goals * Collaborate with other public policy staff in Texas and in Washington, DC to achieve state and national goals * Complete timely and accurate documentation and reports of all public policy activities and manage the public policy database, regularly updating and monitoring the Chapter's progress toward set goals. * Aide in maintaining the chapter's market position as the leading, local resource for media and public affairs representatives on Alzheimer's research, public policy and human interest stories. * Support national initiatives with local media coverage and promotional activities. * Coordinate, with appropriate Chapter staff, annual communications /public relations plan and calendar * Write and/or edit all press releases and other communication pieces to local media, ensuring that all print and electronic materials meet local and national standards * Maintain and grow media contact database for delivering accurate, timely media releases. * Continually pitch media and build relationships on behalf of the Alzheimer's Association. * Build ongoing relationships with other staff in order to better understand and meet their communications needs. * Work with appropriate staff to maintain and update the Chapter's website and work with Development staff to coordinate posts on Chapter's Facebook page and other social media; Ensure that social media content and images reflect Alzheimer's Association national guidelines * Coordinate the production of the monthly eNews and chapter annual report * Track media coverage/impressions and prepare required national reports. * Other duties as requested by President & CEO.
Ideal Candidate
* Proven to be a proficient writer and editor * Bachelor's degree required, preferably in journalism, communications, public relations or public policy; Master's degree preferred * At least 2 years of experience in public relations or public policy activities * Excellent customer service, organization and time management skills * Proficiency in MS Office products, especially Word and Excel * Ability to physically bend, push, stand and walk. Must be able upon occasion to move or lift approximately 25 pounds
