Summary
General Statement of Duties: The Chief of Staff assists the President and the Executive Board in developing, leading and implementing Local 105's organizing, bargaining, internal organizing and political programs. The Chief of Staff will continue our transition to an organizing and Member Leadership in Action model of representation and leadership development in order to build power for our members and all working people. Reporting to and acting under the authority of the President, the Chief of Staff will drive our union’s program and goals through the supervision of Senior-Level staff.
Responsibilities
1. Staff Management · Daily supervision of all Senior-Level staff · Establish, monitor and maintain accountability structures and oversee all staff personnel issues. · Supervise and work with the Division Directors; monitor their work plans and progress to goals in order to move the Local's program. · Lead Staff Meetings. · Develop and oversee staff development program 2. Interface with President · Provide regular updates to the President on the Local's progress on moving the Local's program and helps problem solve any obstacles to moving the Local's program. · Integrate the President into important membership meetings, speaking engagements and other events, as appropriate. · Seeking the President's guidance and decision-making authority as appropriate. · Reports to the President 3. Move Local 105’s Program Work directly with the President, Executive Board, and staff to develop the Local's organizing, worksite, and political program. · Supervise and work directly with the Directors and other senior staff to implement the Local's program. · Work directly with the Executive Board and senior staff on strategic planning for the Local. Assist the Executive Board in planning and conducting the annual (or semi­annual) Leadership Summit. · Oversee training and staff development to implement the Local's program. · As assigned, work with other Locals, SEIU Nationally, and allied organizations on shared programmatic goals. 4. Collective Bargaining · Oversee all collective bargaining of the Local. · Participate in and/or lead bargaining as Chief Spokesperson, when appropriate. · Develop senior staff and assist them and bargaining committees in conducting collective bargaining and contract campaigns in all of our bargaining units. · Oversee, supervise and assist Directors and our staff in contract enforcement. 5. Other Duties as Assigned: This position may be assigned other duties appropriate to the high-level responsibilities of this position.
Ideal Candidate
* Minimum of seven to ten (7-10) years of experience in the labor movement, or closely related field, including a minimum of three (3) years of experience supervising staff. This must include significant experience in bargaining/representation, organizing, and/or political work in the labor movement or closely related field. * Demonstrated track record of excellent judgment in highly complex situations involving staff, member leader, and employer relationships. * Proven ability of leading success within an organization in organizing (growth), bargaining, and other labor movement programs in the context of teamwork, innovation, and accountability. * · Excellent written and verbal communication skills; including listening * · Commitment to the labor movement and a strong work ethic. * Functions with a high level of integrity, transparency, and ability to give and receive feedback. * Candidates should have strong emotional intelligence and a commitment to their own growth and development—and of others.
