Summary
The Flow Cytometry Supervisor is a critical member of the Flow Cytometry Management team. The Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day personnel, workflow, quality control and equipment management within their section, bringing any potential issues to the Flow Cytometry Management team for evaluation and resolution. Working closely with and under guidance of the Senior Director, Flow Cytometry or Manager, Flow Cytometry, the Supervisor helps ensure the accuracy, reliability and timeliness of patient test results. Duties also include training, quality assurance tasks and personnel supervision.
Responsibilities
* Supervises a designated section/shift of the laboratory operations of the Flow Cytometry department to achieve the highest quality of test results and the most efficient use of resources while adhering to established turn-around-times and maintaining operations within compliance and regulatory guidelines. * Each individual performing high complexity testing must-- * Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results. * Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens. * Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, perform instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance. * Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance. * Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and must either correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director. * Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications. * Identifies and resolves problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results. * Helps to maintain a safe working environment by strict adherence to company safety policies and procedures and is alert to the existence of safety hazards reporting any unsafe conditions to the department manager. * Assure that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications. * Assist in monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained. * Assist in providing consultation to resolve technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures established either by the laboratory director or technical supervisor; * Provide day-to-day supervision of testing personnel. * Ensure that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning. * Review and approve test data before results are given to the hematopathologists for reporting. * Train new personnel with regard to technical and operational procedures. * Address employee relation issues in conjunction with Human Resources and department management as needed * Participate in initiatives to improve employee engagement to positively impact operational results, customer satisfaction and employee retention. * Provide orientation to testing personnel. * Annually evaluate and document the performance of department personnel. * Supervises or assists in the evaluation of equipment and reagents for potential use in the lab * Performs duties of laboratory personnel in the laboratory as required * Utilizes the in-house LIS, accessioning and reporting systems. * Conforms to all company policies and procedures and maintains a business-like, professional attitude at all times. * Supervisory Responsibilities include:** * Provides supervision, oversight and guidance to Flow Cytometry Technologists, Clinical Lab Scientists, Clinical Lab Technicians and Lab Assistants working in the CLIA and CAP certified flow cytometry clinical laboratory. * Performs staff training * Schedules personnel as appropriate to meet the case load. * Participate in the interview process and selection of new employees * Participates in cross departmental meetings and initiatives, as needed. * Reviews and approves time cards, schedules, time off, etc. for staff * Must be accessible to testing personnel at all times testing is performed to provide on-site, telephone or electronic consultation to resolve technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures established either by the laboratory director or technical supervisor * In the absence of the director must be responsible for the proper performance of all laboratory procedures and reporting of test results
Ideal Candidate
**Education & Qualifications** * BS/BA in biology, chemistry, medical science or a related field. * 1+ years of supervisory experience preferred. * 5 years of experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) (minimum), 7+ years preferred. * Flow Cytometry experience preferred, not required. Experience in abnormal hematology is required. * Requires a CA Clinical Laboratory Scientist * Obtain ISAC/ICCS flow cytometry certification within two years of certification eligibility. * Requires a working knowledge of CLIA law and other regulatory guidelines.
