Summary
The Chief Engineer is responsible for planning, organizing and supervising assigned activities of the Engineering & Maintenance Department and services functions which are necessary in maintaining the physical structures, HVAC, mechanical, electrical systems, utilities and grounds of the hospital in an operative and safe working condition. This position is also responsible for planning and maintaining an effective organization by administering labor and material controls, safety training of maintenance personnel in operations and maintenance of all buildings, structures, and equipment.
Responsibilities
* Administers and supervises the predictive and preventive maintenance programs to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the entire hospital, monitoring its application to assure maximum effectiveness and provides appropriate documentation of it. * Develops and participates in the orientation of new employees and the continuing education of department employees in the repair and maintenance of all equipment. Instructs personnel regarding hazards and safety to ensure safe procedures and safe use of equipment. * Ensures staff work is compliant with all safety codes, building codes and operating process. * Monitors departmental personnel matters and makes recommendations, such as selection, training, promotion, discipline, and termination. Supervises scheduling of department personnel. Manages personnel issues to the Director for final disposition. * Participates in the development and applications of standards of quality and productivity for the Engineering Department. Supervises and directs Engineering Department personnel in the use of policies, procedures and standards of work performance for maintenance and repair of equipment, buildings, and building systems. * Reports daily to the Director regarding the physical and structural conditions of hospital facilities and the status of work in progress. * Responsible for maintaining repair and replacement records to keep within the projected budget. Provides input to the Director of Engineering of projected costs and budget requirements. * Responsible for operating budget of both salary and materials services of assigned programs and areas. * Schedules and supervises maintenance repair work, alterations, remodeling, and minor construction and checks out installation and servicing of mechanical and electrical equipment and building systems. * Works closely with other departments and administration, negotiates priorities, plans work schedules, and makes job assignments, place orders for materials, supplies and parts. Recommends use of outside specialty contractors as necessary.
Ideal Candidate
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying. **Education:** * Bachelor's degree in a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university **Experience:** * Five (5) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience **License/Certification:** * CDL California Driver's License **Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities** * Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. * Ability to develop, implement and evaluate efficient and cost-effective methods for construction, repair and/or maintenance projects as applicable. * Ability to manage complex projects and resources (people, costs, time). * Ability to review, analyze and evaluate designs and installations and prepare comprehensive reports. * Knowledge of cost estimating, contract administration and project management. * Knowledge of engineering principles, practices, and mathematics. * Knowledge of materials methods and principles used in the maintenance of hospital, clinic and office building installations and systems. * Knowledge of principles and practices of organization, administration, fiscal and personnel management.
