Summary
Our client is seeking a Controller to lead the accounting team for the company’s fast-growing real estate private lending business. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and overseeing all internal accounting activities relating to the company and family office functions. The company has experienced rapid growth in the last five years and further growth is anticipated. The successful candidate will have at least seven years of accounting and finance managerial experience, ideally in real estate, and have experience gathering, evaluating, presenting and reporting financial information to the executive team and institutional and high net worth investors. This person will use his/her managerial skills to leverage the strengths of the current accounting team members and streamline workflows making better use of technology to prepare for future growth.
Responsibilities
* Lead existing three-person accounting team * Oversee day to day accounting activities, including but not limited to financial reporting, receivables, and payables for approximately 110 loans, several joint venture projects, and several family entities * Monitor and ensure that financial preparation and reporting is timely, accurate and GAAP compliant * Provide status of financial condition by collecting, interpreting, and reporting financial data utilizing Timberline accounting and loan servicing software. Provide timely information and reports to leadership, outside accounting firms, lenders, investors and others as required * Manage Timberline accounting and loan servicing database (add companies, loans, set up bank accounts, assign loans to staff, etc.) * Interface with technology consultant and senior leadership to implement best technology practices and further automate workflows * Work with accounting associates to provide external accountants with all required data to prepare tax returns and audited financial statements * Use managerial skills and financial knowledge to enhance the overall efficiency and effectiveness of company systems, processes and procedures * Promote high levels of accounting team performance by setting clear objectives and standards. Provide coaching, counseling and candid feedback to associates. Develop accounting team by recruiting and training associates * Protect assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls * Protect operations by keeping financial information and plans confidential * Track investor capital accounts, funds, and disbursements * Special projects and managerial responsibilities as assigned
Ideal Candidate
Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree in accounting and at least seven years of progressively responsible experience in a fast-paced, service-oriented real estate company. The candidate must be a team player who possesses proven leadership and communication skills and have strong analytical and problem solving abilities. In addition, he/she should possess the following qualifications: * Strong computer skills including knowledge of MS Office including a high level of ability with Excel as well as experience with Timberline or similar real estate accounting software * Understanding of a variety of investment structures * Exceptionally well-organized, able to adapt quickly to competing and changing priorities while closely monitoring critical dates and departmental obligations * Sees the big picture and the department’s role in supporting the company’s success while maintaining excellent attention to detail and oversight of day-to-day accounting activities * Impeccable integrity and ethics.
