Summary
Responsible for managing and maintaining databases for large longitudinal cohort studies. This is a database programmer position in which the candidate will be responsible for completing tasks addressing a wide variety of needs, including data cleaning, linking databases, creating longitudinal datasets, documentation, and quality assurance. The position requires programming in SAS, including SAS SQL and SAS MACRO language. The ideal candidate for this position will be able to maintain existing databases and processes while incorporating new data and features to meet team needs.
Responsibilities
* Using SAS, and other applicable software, manages and maintains comprehensive data, ensuring consistency, quality and integrity. * Develops algorithms and writes programs to clean and update variables/datasets from the Millennium Cohort Program. Runs programs to create final datasets for this large program ensuring accuracy. * Creates programs and algorithms to check and monitor the data quality of internal and external data sources. * Links Millennium Cohort Program data with secondary data sources (e.g. mortality data, physical fitness data, and deployment history data). * Conducts needs assessments, designs and creates databases for end data users, and participates in testing and implementation of new applications and/or enhancements and modifications to existing systems. * Develops alternate designs to resolve problems in acquisition, storage, or retrieval of data, utilizing knowledge of electronic data processing principles, mathematics, and computer capabilities. * Documents all activities with detailed Standard Operating Procedures and execute version control and archiving for programming related to the acquisition, storage, or retrieval of incoming data sources. * Maintains and updates the data dictionaries for the Millennium Cohort Program. * Performs basic statistical analyses. * Provides assistance and training to data users. * Communicates to other team members about data requests, data anomalies, and other data issues. * Contributes to the team effort by accomplishing related duties as needed. * Drafts and helps manage data requests and acquisition agreements.
Ideal Candidate
**Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:** * Experience using SAS, including SAS SQL and SAS MACRO language, for data manipulation * Ability to design and implement systems necessary to collect, maintain, and archive longitudinal data specific to requirements. * Creates custom datasets/extracts for end users. * Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. * Ability to resolve data input, storage and/or retrieval problems and to design solutions and modifications. * Strong numerical and programming skills, with a scientific, healthcare, or computer science background * Ability to verify data input and correct errors. * Knowledge of structured programming, testing, and debugging techniques. * Ability to interact with epidemiologists, biostatisticians, and other staff in a team environment. * Ability to implement, troubleshoot, and document programming changes and modifications. * Knowledge of computer data processing principles. * Ability to manage the creation of necessary data use agreements and other regulatory documents. * Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: * Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise. * Ability to create data capture and input specifications. * Ability to provide a range of systems training and/or support activities for data users. * Experience working with healthcare data, particularly military healthcare data, is desired. * Knowledge of military data collection practices is desired, but not necessary. **Minimum Education/Training Requirements:** * Master’s degree (preferred) in health sciences/informatics, biostatistics, applied mathematics, public health, or related field with at least 2 years of experience in data management; or Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of professional experience, including 2 years of data management, will be considered. **Physical Capabilities:** * Walking, standing, must be able to read reports, labels and use computer, must be able to hear well enough to communicate with coworkers, must be able to write, type, and use phone system. **Security Clearance:** * It is a condition of employment with the Naval Health Research Center that you undergo a favorable National Agency Check with Local Agency and Credit Checks (NACLC) investigation which will include being fingerprinted. If a favorable NACLC is not received, your employment with the Foundation would terminate.
