Summary
The Technology Leader – Arc Welding is the senior-most technical professional in the arc welding technology area and is accountable to support the business development and research processes.
Responsibilities
* Independently sets goals for self and others, facilitates team goal setting, and establishes action plans. Mentors and reviews work of other engineers in their technical arena to ensure effective problem resolution. * Collaborates with other Technology Leaders to advance EWI's overall technology position. * Corporate or industry-wide expert with leading-edge research resulting in competitive advantage to the company. * Influences and directs development of corporate technology strategies. * Leads projects and/or programs of significant importance to the business; provides final technical review. * Identifies and evaluates future technical needs and capabilities. * Promotes EWI's technical excellence in the larger technical community through publications, presentations & professional committees. * Writes and approves complex technical and business documents, often involving original research. Delivers persuasive technical presentations to large groups of experts and/or industry associations. Develops and publishes research papers for external peer review & comment. * Utilizes technical knowledge and interpersonal communication styles to influence peers, team members, project team leaders, clients, managers, technology leaders and executives. * Identifies opportunities for promoting EWI's technical capabilities. * Creates and develops major research projects that lead to breakthrough technology which benefits industry. * Introduces new technical ideas or technologies that may lead to industrial applications. * Recognized by industry and peers as a subject matter expert. * Promotes business growth by increasing the value of technical capabilities. * Initiates new contact with customer in proactive sales and marketing transactions. * Initiates and manages sales and marketing processes from start to completion in collaboration with the Business Development Manager. * Interacts with customer via personal interface identify technology goals/solutions; explores sales opportunities (goal expansion). * Identifies project expansion opportunities in collaboration with other Technology Leaders and external partners. * Generally expected to manage large sales opportunities. * Demonstrates understanding of key business systems and processes including project management, finance (budget, forecasting, and revenue), contracts, leadership and talent management principles. * Provides input to budgeting capital and R&D investments. * Assesses intellectual property potential for new technologies.
Ideal Candidate
* Extensive knowledge of the development and industrial application of a wide variety of arc fusion processes, such as SMAW, FCAW, SAW, GTAW, GMAW, PAW * In-depth knowledge of thermal cutting and spray methods, EB welding, arc additive manufacturing, welding power supply technology and affiliated equipment (torches, data acquisition systems, etc.) * Skillful in publishing, developing, and delivering conference presentations * Demonstrated adaptability and flexibility * Exhibits sound judgment in decision making and execution * Solutions-oriented mindset with ability to provide recommendations on issues * Proven ability to foster relationships with current and new clients * Ability to multi-task and work autonomously while under substantial schedule pressure * Ability to act as a seasoned, experienced professional with an understanding of industry practices and company policies and procedures * Strong interpersonal skills supporting collaboration, negotiation, and teamwork with a diverse group of sales, marketing, engineering, and various other proposal personnel * Excellent written and oral communication skills * Proven success in a team-oriented environment * Willingness to travel periodically (25-35%) to customers and conferences * B.S. in Welding Engineering, Metallurgical or Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, or similar disciplines within engineering * Graduate degree in relevant area of study is preferable * Fifteen (15) or more years’ experience in a technical and business role * Experience in a research and/or consulting organization is preferable * Experience managing client relationships and developing technical solutions for clients
