Summary
Comcast is looking for an enthusiastic User Experience (UX) Researcher to join our highly respected in-house user research practice. The UX Researcher works closely with UX Design, Prototyping, Product, Business and Engineering teams to design, conduct and report on a variety of studies that will help Comcast continue to deliver profitable products and services that put the user first. The Comcast UX Research team supports a range of cutting edge interactive products on multiple platforms (mobile, TV UI and online), as well as print & product design, industrial design and service design initiatives. The team enjoys great flexibility in suggesting and employing a variety of methods including ethnographic field research, traditional usability testing, contextual interviews, heuristic reviews, and surveys and other quantitative methods. Responsibilities
**User Research Facilitation and Synthesis (70%)** * Design generative and evaluative studies to gain user insights, validate concepts, and uncover new product or business opportunities. * Lead and/or participate in preparation efforts for each study, including methodology and script development, participant recruitment, and preparation of testing materials and prototypes by other teams. * Facilitate and observe studies in our in-house user research labs and in the field (e.g. in customer homes, in call centers, on truck rolls) to gain first-hand knowledge of user behaviors. * Analyze findings and synthesize findings with past relevant research, market research and other secondary sources to strengthen and reinforce the output of each study. * Translate research insights into actionable recommendations and direction while also supporting re-use and alignment with future studies. * Deliver insights in presentations and readouts. **Education and Application of Research Methods and Findings (20%)** * Support senior research staff in collaborative hands-on working sessions with UX and product teams to apply insights to business and design decisions and ideas. * Support senior staff in development of UX models and frameworks based on direct user evidence. * Encourage members of design, business, and product teams to be involved as partners in studies to gain first-hand knowledge of user behaviors, mental models and needs. **Research Practice Development (10%)** * Contribute to a team toolbox of research methods and techniques. * Support and establish reusable, templated systems, automation and process guides with other members of the research team. * Optimize work processes, models, equipment and materials by reviewing their effectiveness with each study. * Maintain the highest standards of product usability and quality, take a lead role in delivering best in class experiences to ensure that projects are delivered to expectations and on time. * Ensure a positive, collaborative cross-functional team atmosphere. **Additional responsibilities may include:** * Responsible for researching customer usability experience of digital media. * Reviews the initial web design; assesses usability, look, and feel of the company Web site. Creates simple demos of new tools and documents functionality designed. * Monitors the digital media form created to determine traffic through the Web site. Has in-depth experience, knowledge and skills in own discipline. Works independently with minimal guidance. * Specializes in user experience strategy and design, as well as front-end prototyping for web, mobile, and other digital delivery platforms; helps drive the support and future development for the company's public Web site and public digital communications channels. * Coordinates and contributes to the experience design for external digital communications and Web sites for the company, including content development, user research, user-centered design processes, project leadership, and user experience prototyping and development. * Assists with a variety of web and new media projects for the company, and collaborates in special projects for the company where there are additional needs for public web, new media communication and the use of the company's public Web site. * Oversees efforts to expand and enhance the digital delivery channels of the company, improving the user experience for accessing current and future publications, outreach, research, data, special projects, speeches, education materials, multi-media content, and other types of communications that support the mission of the company. * Assesses a product's positioning and role within the online organization's sites, products, and services. * Develops and writes interaction and functional specifications. * Reviews competing products and recommends design solutions that differentiate the organization's products from those of competitors. * Develops new research and tests theories that lead to alternative, leading edge design solutions. * Consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance.
Ideal Candidate
* Degree in Psychology, Anthropology, Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, Digital Media, Human Factors, Cognitive Science related discipline or equivalent experience. Masters degree a plus. * Familiarity with a range of user research methods used to gather qualitative and quantitative data (contextual interviews, traditional task-based usability testing, focus groups, card sorting, survey development, secondary research analysis, competitive analysis, etc.) * 1-3 years experience planning, conducting, analyzing and reporting on user testing and user studies for discovery and validation; comfortable facilitating interviews. * Familiarity testing with prototypes (rough drafts and sketches, paper prototypes, working prototypes) and live builds. * Analytical problem-solving skills, outstanding writing and presentation skills; comfortable presenting to a group. * Experience with MORAE, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, Visio, and Axure; experience with rendering and editing video a plus. * Ability to organize and prioritize while working on multiple, simultaneous projects of varied size and complexity. * Desire to continually stay current with technology, trends, tools and industry standards in UX, usability and user research. * Insatiable curiosity about human behavior. * Desire to be part of a collaborative team. * Desire to constantly learn and explore new methods, ideas or subject matter areas. * Experience in Information Architecture, Interaction Design and/or Visual Design a plus. * Interest in service design and field research a plus. * Experience with remote testing a plus. * Experience in customer-facing digital media projects a plus. * Generally requires 5-8 years related experience
