Summary
The Financial Analyst supports the business by completing complex journal entries and reconciliations, provides accounting guidance, partners with Customer Service to process third party sales files, and is responsible for the analysis and distribution of financial data for Cengage Learning business units. The position writes and maintains reports and schedules, and presents results in a concise and meaningful manner. The position works with finance and accounting personnel from corporate offices and the business units, as well as with audit teams. To be successful in the role, a firm understanding of the structure and functionality of general ledger and accounting systems is essential, as well as knowledge of financial reporting and analytical software.
Responsibilities
* Supports cross-functional processes related to revenue and cost of sales by understanding and monitoring partner distribution agreements, revenue streams, product groups, etc. This includes preparing monthly scheduled journal entries, reviewing and consolidating partner sales reports, and performing benchmarking and variance analysis. * Timely and accurate completion of monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes using JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, Hyperion Essbase, Showcase, DataWarehouse, Excel and Access. * Maintains support and completes month end data integrity checks, journal entries, and core account reconciliations. * Ensures the completeness and accuracy of company balance sheet and income statement. Performs financial analysis with various degrees of complexity to identify variances and assist in resolution. * Leverages transactional data to assess business performance and deliver analysis. Works with large amounts of data across multiple systems. * Understanding of the various transaction types and the impact of those transactions on reported financial information. * Proactively communicate and collaborate with external and internal customers to deliver data and analysis. * Assists FP&A with monthly close questions and supplemental data collection. * Assists Corporate Accounting with journal entries and ad-hoc data analysis requests. * Partners with others on the team, and is able to work independently. * Performs other duties as assigned.
Ideal Candidate
**Basic (Required)** * Bachelor degree required, preferably in Accounting/Finance * Minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience working with accounting & reporting systems and financial analysis * Strong understanding of financial analysis techniques and a strong working knowledge of MS Excel and reporting software * Must be results oriented, innovative, adaptable, and capable of working independently * Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build working relationships with all levels of management and stakeholders **Preferred** * Public Accounting Experience and/or strong working knowledge of US GAAP * Experience in using reporting and analysis software such as ShowCase or Hyperion Essbase * Familiarity with ERP systems such as JD Edwards, SAP, or PeopleSoft * Familiarity with MS Access
