Responsibilities
The assistant director of design brings to CCA a unique blend of strategic oversight, administrative acumen, and zeal for design and design education. You will work as a part of CCA’s multi-disciplinary administrative team to support and guide a robust group of design students, faculty, and administrative staff. Will also serve as a key liaison between academic and administrative operations at the California College of the Arts. This position provides strategic leadership and operational oversight on the day-to-day work for the division, including course scheduling, faculty hiring, event support, external partner relations support, budget management, and relations with the diverse range of college departments including Educational Technology, Facilities, Shops, Admissions, and Industry Partnerships. The assistant director straddles these two arenas, tracking and recommending strategic opportunities and initiating operational efficiencies. Strategically implements, tracks, and evaluates results for divisional program support which includes: * Identifying and managing execution of program staff work across the division as part of both a larger annual strategic plan and as part of day-to-day operations; aligning program staff work with larger strategic goals and creating prioritization metrics for staff to uniformly follow. * Collaborating with the dean of design and director of academic administration to monitor and tactically manage budgets, facilities, course schedules, faculty contracts and hiring. * Presenting administrative updates and recommendations to the dean and director on a weekly basis to foster a communicative, responsive team addressing diverse program needs. * Initiating regular, tracked, ongoing dialogue with CCA teams – Educational Technology, Admissions, Facilities, Communications, among others to communicate and track division requests. * Reviewing program staff tasks on a monthly basis to enact efficiencies. * Identifying training areas to increase program staff effectiveness. * Meeting on a weekly basis, one-on-one with each program manager to assess effectiveness and ensure support; generating performance reviews. * Creating and monitoring a work-ticket system for monitoring support requests with CCA teams. * Managing faculty searches and implementing best practices around searches and hiring. * Tracking and managing evening events sponsored by the division; including event management and attendance via delegation and personal supervision. * In partnership with the dean, manage external key partners, sponsored studios and special projects as needed. Works as key member of divisional teams, peers and supervisors across the college, identifying efficiencies and best practices, which includes: * Collaborating with divisional assistant directors to address cross-campus issues, including course scheduling. * Working with dean, director, chairs and program staff to monitor process for annual course schedules. * Understanding and articulates divisional curriculum plans, enrollment projections, academic goals and initiatives. * Collaborating with dean and director to create strategic budget that aligns to the overall academic goals of the division. * Monitoring and tracks program budgets for individual programs. * Meeting with program chairs to prepare program budget requests. * Understanding and articulates CCA Student and Faculty Handbooks, to ensure accurate advising on academic issues. * Coordinating regular meetings of division program chairs; setting agenda, identifying goals, and facilitating dialogue around critical issues.
Ideal Candidate
* Bachelor’s degree required. Coursework in creative work, including studio-based classes, desired. * Strategic mindset. * Proven track record of administrative leadership. * Abundant good cheer. * Balances aspirations and resources. * Full understanding of Microsoft Office tools; knowledge and experience with Adobe Creative Suite. * Understanding of and interest in social media.
