Ivanka Trump Criticized for Promoting Use of Unpaid Interns

Ivanka Trump, daughter of Donald Trump, has run into controversy as of late for a blog post in which her interns explain how to supposedly thrive in their unpaid roles.

While the article was written last month, Trump helped it re-emerge recently by tweeting it from her Twitter account with the hashtag “#nomoneynoproblems.”

The fact that Trump seems to be encouraging and glamorizing unpaid internships has drawn the ire of online onlookers.

Some comments from fellow Twitter users include:

  • “Lemme guess — an unpaid intern is writing this as you vacay in Croatia”
  • "Ivanka Trump tried to give advice on something she knows nothing about"
  • “As if you have even the slightest idea about what it's like to work as an unpaid intern! Give me a break”

Others have highlighted how Trump is a hypocrite in pushing for equal pay for women, but doesn’t pay her interns.

Some also took issue with the fact that the emoji characters that Trump used in her tweet all had dark skin, which was seen to be insensitive.

A study found that women are 77 percent more likely to be in an unpaid internship than men, which further explains the outrage of some.

In the U.S., interns make up about 1.3 percent of the total workforce. The improper use of interns has only escalated in recent years.

In 2015, one male intern protested the UN’s use of interns outside of Geneva.
