Military Spouse Job Program Celebrating 5th Anniversary

The Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP) program, part of a larger initiative on the part of the Department of Defense, is celebrating its fifth anniversary in supporting military member husbands and wives.

The program, started by Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, was launched in June 2011. Its mission has been to connect “military spouses with partner employees worldwide with 24/7 access to job openings and career connections.”

Since 2011, the program has expanded from 73 partner employers to over 300. The program has seen over five million job postings, and employers from a variety of industries have hired 95,000 military spouses.

The program has also helped military spouses pursue any educational goals they may have, while assisting in keeping statistics and tabs on the military spouse demographic.

While most of the focus with the MSEP program is on helping affected military spouses, many have highlighted the benefits to a business hiring such an individual.

Eddy Mentzer, associate director in the Department of Defense’s office of family readiness policy and a military spouse himself, commented, “Hiring spouses is good for business because military spouses possess the qualities highly sought after by employers, such as dedication, flexibility, a strong work ethic, and endless energy.”

This, of course, is important to highlight, as the physical location of a military spouse usually changes often.

The MSEP program is available to spouses of individuals in any branch of the U.S. military.
