About New Relic Inc.
New Relic is a Software Analytics company that makes sense of billions of metrics across millions of apps.
Summary
We’re looking for an experienced Database Administrator to join our Database team. This role requires extensive operational experience working with databases, including thorough knowledge of one or more of the three database systems we support: MySQL, Postgres, and Cassandra. We’re running our data tier at world-class scale and expecting it to perform, sometimes at the limit, so deep understanding and an interest in tuning are critical. Our database systems write over 200 billion application performance metrics a day to disk. As a part of the Database team, you’ll focus on supporting the database ecosystem that powers New Relic’s applications. You’ll be working with engineers who build and support everything from the network to deployment infrastructure in a fast-paced environment where things change rapidly, and where we’re constantly increasing our scale. You will play a critical role in advising software engineering teams on scalability and performance best practices throughout the development process. We believe in automation for repeatability and efficiency and you’ll need reasonable skill in a major dynamic language.
Responsibilities
* Assisting in the administration, management, and monitoring of MySQL, Postgres and Cassandra database systems. * Analyzing our existing databases on an ongoing basis and making recommendations about scalability and high availability changes. * Developing tools to automate regular tasks (backups, fail-overs, server provisioning, etc.) to reduce possibilities for manual error and increase team efficiency. * Identifying database tuning settings and query changes necessary to improve performance, availability, and reliability. * Supporting development teams in building features that perform at scale. * Working with the Site Engineering team to deliver new MySQL, Postgres and Cassandra services in an automated, scalable way. * Perform periodic on-call duty as part maintaining the availability and performance of New Relic’s database tier.
Ideal Candidate
* 5+ years real world experience administering MySQL and/or Postgres databases, or experience supporting Cassandra in production. * 5+ years experience in an operational role performing system administration and DevOps tasks to support database systems running on Linux servers. * Experience administering Cassandra in production is desired. * Strong Linux administration skills. * Proficiency in Ruby, Python for database tooling. Go or Java are also advantageous. * Proficiency using Puppet, Chef or other configuration management tools. * Highly developed problem-solving and debugging skills.
