Summary
The Behavioral Research Specialist will assist the customer in all office activities and operations as assigned. The individual will provide support regarding behavioral research spanning divisions and offices as appropriate. They will conduct empirical and scientific research on protective investigations, incidents, threats, and inappropriate communications. They will conduct systematic, critical, intensive, scientifically valid, methodologically sound, statistically reliable, operationally relevant, and behavior based empirical research; either independently or in collaboration with team members, with some supervisory oversight as needed. The specific risk level for this position will be provided under the task order.
Responsibilities
* Identify and conceptualize research needs, plan, design, and conduct experiments and studies. * Apply scientific methods to all phases of all projects. * Craft methodology and procedures. * Select appropriate samples. * Collect, manage, and document data, results, and findings. * Interpret results and package information for user consumption. * Use statistical software to enter and analyze data; write code as needed for complex statistical analysis. * Develop codebooks and code data reliably. * Work and consult with groups/teams. * Make operational recommendations based on empirical research findings. * Prepare reports and briefings. * Review, evaluate, and apply research products. * Publish and disseminate results, as appropriate. * Present results to internal and external audiences. * Conduct literature reviews, keep abreast of new scientific information, and utilize research in operational applications. * Perform additional responsibilities falling within the scope and mission of the research program as required. * Communicate via telephone, Lync and/or e-mail with high-level officials throughout the agency and District offices, as well as other contract affiliates. * Represent the agency at meetings, briefings, and interagency conferences. * Ability to travel within the continental United States in connection with USMS duties. * Compliance with all applicable security and conduct requirements, regulations, and procedures.
Ideal Candidate
* Three to five years of research experience in a law enforcement setting, or three to five years of research experience involving targeted violence and threat assessment in other institutions/agencies. * A Master s Degree in a field involving extensive emphasis on social science research and statistics (e.g., Psychology, Criminology, Sociology, Public Research, etc.) with an ability to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities related to specific types of research and statistics related to the fields of violence and assessment. A successful candidate will likely have a Doctoral Degree in the same field detailed above with the knowledge, skills, and abilities also detailed above. * Strong working knowledge of the scientific fields involving violence and assessment. * Knowledge of scientific methods. * Ability to think creatively and critically. * Ability to apply inductive and deductive reasoning. * Ability to meet with and work effectively with people. * Ability to plan, design, and execute scientific research projects in an operational setting; the ability to review past investigative cases in a strategic manner and utilize the results of this operational research to inform future investigative casework. * Previous experience conducting all phases of scientific research, presenting research findings at conferences, and publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals or other peer-reviewed outlets. * Ability to communicate factual information and ideas in English, clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, often under pressure and tight deadlines. * Time management, organization and prioritization skills. * Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal employees as well as outside sources. * Attention to detail. * Communication skills. * Exhibit a high level of confidentiality. * Ability to quickly and effectively adapt to change. * Knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office Suite to include Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint, and previous experience with social science statistical software (e.g. SPSS, StatView, etc.)
