Summary
The Ocean Marine Division is currently searching for an Business Developer Specialist / Ocean Marine Specialist for the Los Angeles / Southern CA territory. The person hired for this position will oversee the development of the territory, directly underwrite and market Ocean Marine products to existing and prospective producers, and will be responsible for the leadership of the underwriting staff.
Responsibilities
* Has responsibility for coordinating and supervising the day-to-day activities for employees. Supervises employees and may perform the work of subordinates. Has responsibility for the performance and coaching of staff. Has a participatory role in decisions regarding development, hiring, firing, performance management, pay increases, etc., for direct reports. * Oversees the development of the territory. Accountable for the development of marketing plans for assigned territory(ies), taking into consideration the strengths and weaknesses of the agency plant(s) / territory(ies) and competitors, divisional objectives and overall market conditions. Oversees staff in prospecting, appointing and managing agency relationships and in achieving production and profitability objectives. Ensures timely review and analysis of agents' production and results and that appropriate corrective measures, including modification or cancellation of agency appointments, are implemented. Oversees resolution to problems between company and producer. * Has responsibility for marketing company products and services to existing and prospect agencies. Serves as a technical expert in and ensures staff are able to interpret and explain products, facilities, practices and services. Gathers, analyzes and maintains competitive information. Makes appropriate recommendations based on competitive landscape. * Has accountability for own profit-oriented risk selection / rejection, pricing decisions, within designated authority, and those made by members of the team / unit. Empowers employees to use independent judgment and initiative to support business goals. Ensures the monitoring of persistency, placement and agent / agency debt. Monitors aggregate quality and pricing for assigned territory. Ensures a high level of customer service. Binds and / or oversees the binding of risks in the field, within level of authority. Oversees and may perform risk appraisals. May take an active role, as needed, for large and / or complex accounts during upstart and / or critical periods in order to assist agents in producing business. * Ensures that effective business relationships with internal and external customers / coworkers are developed and maintained in order to attract and retain profitable business. Ensures consistency across the team when communicating with agents and brokers. * Identifies opportunities for and may spearhead development of new business and / or programs. * Administers and applies insurance laws and regulations and as appropriate administers, applies and may update underwriting rules and guidelines, and rating manual rules. * Analyzes quality and quantity of risks underwritten and prepares reports to communicate this information.
Ideal Candidate
* Minimum of 5 years of experience underwriting, prospecting, and soliciting commercial business and 2 years of supervisory experience. * Ocean Marine experience is a plus, with emphasis on one or more of the following: Commercial Hull, Protection and Indemnity (P&I), Marine Liabilities (Primary and Excess), Boat Dealers and Marinas, Ocean Cargo, and Vessel Pollution. * Able to implement underwriting policy under the direction of higher level management. * Position requires frequent day and overnight travel to visit agents and brokers. * Uses communication skills to build and leverage excellent customer relationships and to successfully market products and services. * Progression towards Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Associate of Marine Insurance Management (AMIM) desired. Completion of either or both of these is a plus. * Must have strong hands-on experience with various computer systems including rating systems, MS Word and Excel, Outlook, etc.
