Summary
Performs highly technical, varied and complicated corporate tax research and planning (international and domestic) to optimize the Enbridge organizational structure from a tax perspective and maximize corporate after-tax earnings, within acceptable tax risk parameters, from investments, divestitures and other corporate transactions in the Enbridge Canadian and international group of companies. This position provides primary tax support on Enbridge’s international projects and financing business. This position works closely with experienced internal tax professionals and external service providers.
Responsibilities
* Represents Enbridge tax group on multi-disciplinary project teams. * Contributes to the financial evaluation of assigned projects, including international, pipeline and green energy projects, by reviewing the tax section of financial models, performing tax due diligence, researching and documenting tax issues, identifying and raising related tax risks for consideration and identifying the tax advantages/disadvantages of alternative investment/divestiture structures, with a view to optimizing the company's after-tax earnings. Reviews and provides tax comments on legal agreements for these transactions. * Monitors the international environment and any impacts on Enbridge’s business. Advises, recommends and implements required business decisions. * Transitions successful projects to the foreign Enbridge office and / or tax reporting group that will assume responsibility for tax accounting and reporting. This includes preparation of Step Memo for tax purposes. * Provides tax planning support to Tax Reporting in respect to international tax law. * Works with the international and corporate planning groups to develop a consistent approach to tax assumptions and modeling for tax items within financial projections and project models for Enbridge and Enbridge Income Fund (ENF) corporate groups. * Provides ad hoc tax advice to all of the corporate functions/departments including: acquisitions and corporate development, planning and economics, treasury, controllers, human resources, law, contracts, risk and other groups, as necessary. * Undertakes and completes ad-hoc assigned tax projects independently and with limited supervision. * Monitors, analyzes and prepares position papers describing the impact of new/proposed tax legislation, in assigned areas of responsibility including: international tax, green energy, partnerships and trusts, for Enbridge and ENF tax groups, senior management and affected business areas. * Monitors and manages taxable income/loss positions of significant companies in the Enbridge and ENF corporate groups and the design of intercompany transactions to, effectively, balance taxable income between them and reduce / recover taxes paid. Provides direction and assistance to other departments with obtaining any necessary approvals, implementation and unwinds. * Directs and reviews the work assigned to other team members assigned to project. * Assesses performance and professional development of direct reports, if any. * Assists with the review, evaluation and recommendation of tax-efficient financing structures/transactions and other tax planning opportunities that can make a significant contribution to the consolidated bottom line. * Assists with the development of Canadian tax databases, including calculations of adjusted cost bases, paid-up capital and stated capital, and foreign affiliate surplus pools for decision-making purposes and assists with transitioning responsibility for maintaining these calculations to the tax reporting group. * Develops an understanding of other tax issues and initiatives being addressed by other members of the Enbridge tax planning team and acts as a back-up for Director, Tax Planning and other Tax Planning team members, as required, in their absence. * Assists with department administration including establishing and maintaining well-documented project files, work plan, information sharing between tax planning groups, and ensuring there is adequate documentation for SOX testing. * Acts as the company's tax representative on various corporate and/or industry committees.
Ideal Candidate
* University graduate of Business Administration or a related discipline. * Chartered Professional Accountant / Chartered Accountant designation. * Completion of CPA / CICA In-Depth Tax course. * Completion of CPA / CICA International Tax course, or equivalent. * Completion of CPA / CICA Corporate Reorganizations course, or equivalent. * At least 10 years of tax experience, with a minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in Canadian tax with a focus on Tax Planning. * Previous experience with international tax, including cross-border transactions and foreign affiliate regime is required. * Experience with taxation of partnerships / trusts are a definite asset. * Ability to work independently and apply professional judgment to prioritize and manage a demanding workload. * Confident contributor to project groups. * Strong Excel, Word, oral and written communication skills.
