Summary
The primary responsibility of Naturalist Guide is to provide the highest quality of service to the guests at all times while leading hikes, conducting guest activities and providing accurate and enthusiastic interpretations of the natural and cultural history related to Denali National Park.
Responsibilities
The Lodge Naturalist Guide is responsible for safely transporting guests and will work with Lead Lodge Naturalist Guide and General Manager to assure efficient operations. The Guides are responsible for the safety of the guests they are guiding. **Essential Functions** * Leading hikes in Kantishna, Denali backcountry, and providing natural and cultural history information. Hikes may be casual, moderate, or challenging. * Driving guests in 15 passenger vans to trailheads on private and National Park Service lands. * Driving guest shuttles to Wonder Lake and other areas, (possibly in a bus if you have CDL). * Operate motor vehicles, as required. * Developing and presenting at least 2 different educational programs to guests. * Developing and providing activities for guests. * Organize and maintain Guest Services Desk, program lodge, props, slides, and guide cubbyholes. * Maintaining fishing gear and waders. Sell fishing licenses to guest and complete state license report summary. * Organize and maintain guest hiking gear and rubber boots. * Organize and maintain mountain bikes and equipment. Sign-out mountain bikes to guests, ensuring they follow all road regulations and policies. * Organize and maintain library and art supplies. * Clean and organize drying room, returning gear to the proper place. * Clean and maintain vans and busses – (Bus washers do regular bus washing) * Maintaining, organizing, and setting up the program lodge. * Maintaining equipment/material related to guest programs. * Being especially visible to guests during peak times of service, and to provide immediate assistance to guests as requested. * Must have current Wilderness First Responder, First Aid, CPR, and AED training and preferably Class B Driver’s License with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsement for driving bus to Wonder Lake. * Able to move and lift supplies and equipment weighing 50 pounds or more. * Assist other departments as needed to facilitate the smooth operation of the Lodge and to maximize the guest visit and satisfaction. * Supervisor may assign other duties as needed. **General Functions** * Performs work that is original, dynamic, and creative in character. Each and every situation during your work day may require unique approaches and varying techniques in order to result in a consistent overall high quality experience for lodge guests and staff. Ideal Candidate
**Qualifications** * Must possess a degree (BS or BA) in outdoor education, recreation or other related natural sciences field. * Must have a Wilderness First Responder Certification * Must have current State of Alaska Food Worker’s Card. * Must have current 1st Aid, CPR, and AED Certification. * Class B commercial driver’s license with passenger and air brake endorsement preferred. * Familiar with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). * Proven organization and leadership skills. * Works well under pressure. * Can effectively solve problems. * Able to give and receive direction. * Excellent guest service skills. * Talking to guest and employees to convey information effectively. * Strong listening skills. * Professional oral and written communication skills. * Familiar with the natural and cultural history of Denali National Park, knowledge of Leave-No-Trace principles for sub-arctic region, purpose of National Park Service, wilderness resources, and safety information. * Knowledge of Alaska’s natural history. * Excellent customer service skills.
