Summary

In conjunction with the attending physician and other consultants, the Intensivist assumes responsibility for the care of all patients in the intensive care unit. The Intensivist provides continuous vigilance; early intervention and ongoing care with the goal to decrease ICU related morbidity and mortality. In addition, the Intensivist proactively communicates with the other members of the team to assure optimal results. Furthermore, the Intensivist attempts to decrease unnecessary nighttime burdens upon the attending physician staff. Finally, the Intensivist responds to life threatening emergencies and other duties within the Health Center.

Responsibilities

Clinical Patient Management – Tele-ICU

  • Typical Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Evaluate and treat new adult admissions and intervene to prevent further deterioration.
    • Diagnose and stabilize critically ill medical and surgical patients with impending or active organ failure (respiratory, cardiac, neurologic, hepatic, gastrointestinal, hematologic, renal, etc.) or life-threatening electrolyte and acid-base disturbances, or poisonings
    • Initiate advanced cardiac life support until the code team arrives, then supervise and support the code team.
    • Use data from appropriate monitoring devices to titrate therapy in the ICU.
    • Initiate, manage, and wean patients from mechanical ventilation using a variety of techniques and ventilators.
    • Act as the ICU team leader where appropriate and increase the clinical skill of ICU nurse practitioners, nurses and ancillary personnel in caring for critically ill patients.
    • Institute best practices
    • Respond to patient alarms and alerts
    • Proactively communicate changes in patient status to the appropriate physician(s)
    • Effectively communicate with members of the tele-ICU team in a collegial manner to provide safe and error-free care during routine care and emergent conditions.

Administrative

  • Participate in the educational programs for the critical care unit personnel as well as the medical staff.
  • Participate in monitoring the quality, safety and appropriateness of patient care as requested by the director or designee.
  • Be familiar with required HIPAA compliance regulations.
  • Attendance at the monthly staff meeting is mandatory as is attendance at the quarterly Critical Care Medicine Peer Review meetings.
  • Demonstrate ethical conduct and serve as a positive role model to others at all levels of the organization
Ideal Candidate
  • Graduation from an accredited School of Medicine
  • Board Certification or eligibility in Critical Care Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine or Anesthesia or the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine or Anesthesia.
  • Ability to obtain state medical license in all states where services are provided as well as current Federal Drug Enforcement Agency license and state controlled substance license.
  • Ability to obtain staff privileges at all the hospitals for which coverage is being provided.
  • Current ACLS certification.
