Summary
The Executive Director is responsible for leading the District Council’s program of work, including developing and executing strategies that manage the District Council and Institute resources, expertise, and leadership to have a constructive impact on local and regional development issues and land use policies. The Executive Director will be charged with the oversight and coordination of the various activities of the District Council, including programs, membership, corporate and program sponsorships, communications, public relations, and general management of operations. This position is an outstanding opportunity for a well-regarded member of the land use and development community to expand upon the success of ULI Houston and its strong membership base. This is a full time exempt position located in Houston, Texas.
Responsibilities
* Develop and implement a program of work, a budget, and a staffing plan for the District Council that provides for clear outcomes and methods to measure success. * Advance a comprehensive sponsorship program that provides a robust, sustainable platform for staff and programs, including the support and oversight of volunteers who are working to secure sponsors. * Develop and promote strategies that direct the Houston Council and Institute resources, expertise, and leadership to the issues affecting land use policies through education forums, community initiatives, conferences, meetings, programs, publications, and other sources. * Work with the ULI District Council membership to provide opportunities for active member voluntary engagement in our program of work. * Foster and maintain key external strategic alliances with other professional, academic, public sector, and nonprofit organizations. * Support the Chair and Advisory and Management and Governance Committees in administration, leadership development, and succession. * Oversee, with District Council staff, the implementation of the District Council’s program of work, including the following existing and proposed: **Existing** * Annual Suburban/Urban Marketplace Conferences (400-plus attendees) * Lunch programs (250-plus attendees six times per year) * Young Leaders Group events (100-plus attendees ten times per year) * Advisory Board Committee meetings (50 attendees three times per year) * Member committees (eight volunteer committees; each meets monthly) * UrbanPlan high school and university programs * Community Action Grant work and other partnerships with public and nonprofit entities * Newsletter * Website * Annual Development of Distinction Awards Dinner (300-plus attendees) * Technical Assistance Program panels
Ideal Candidate
* 0+ years’ experience in real estate and land use, community relations, and/or nonprofit administration. * Bachelor’s degree in real estate, urban planning, business/public administration, or related field. An advanced degree in real estate planning or urban studies is desirable. * ULI member highly desirable. * In-depth knowledge of the Texas real estate community. Ability to define the best interests of the Houston District Council and the community at large and to communicate them to both the District Council and the public. * Ability to effectively manage myriad issues and to establish and meet priorities. * Experience in the preparation and monitoring of annual budget and financial statements; fiscally responsible. * Ability to work effectively with people at all levels, including but not limited to corporate leaders, politicians, educators, public officials, etc. * Knowledge of consensus building and the ability to depoliticize sensitive issues; a forward thinker who can resolve issues before they occur. * Proven track record in strategic planning and execution of sound business plans. * Ability to communicate at all levels openly and effectively in both oral and written forms. * Highest level of honesty and integrity. * Ability to maintain and respect confidentiality where and when appropriate. * Highly motivated professional who thrives in a team environment; multi-task-oriented; self-motivated; and takes pride in his/her accomplishments. * Computer savvy, with proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint. Website development experience a plus. * Ability for moderate travel throughout Greater Houston; periodic visits to ULI’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.; attendance at the annual Fall Meeting and Spring Council Forums and periodic meetings with surrounding states and the North Texas, Austin, and San Antonio districts.
