Summary
The Design Specialist/Engineer will work as an integral member of the Lower Mainland Engineering (Access Design) team. This team is responsible for a number of key items such as managing TELUS physical infrastructure, maintaining effective relationships with the Development Community and municipalities, as well as securing the necessary government agency approvals for projects to name a few.
Responsibilities
* Liaise with internal and external customers to determine needs and negotiate issues to resolution * Liaise with developers and municipal officials to provide communication infrastructure solutions * Liaise with Power Companies, Gas Companies and attend regularly scheduled meetings to cover Joint Use technical specifications used for design and construction * Respond to and/or resolve customer complaints * Design technical specifications for outside plant networks * Map new processes as technologies and network topologies change (document and store them on the team website) * Roll out new process and training team members * Review Outside Plant Design jobs for quality/reliability * Build costing tables for team members to use for customer estimates and billing * Ensure adequate capacity of outside plant copper and fibre network is maintained * Ensure schedules and deadlines are monitored and adjusted appropriately (running reports in SAP to assist with workload management) * Lead meetings with key-stakeholders to ensure success outcomes on a project by project, job by job basis * Act as a prime interface between TELUS and our contract design teams to ensure key date metrics are met * Write detailed Statements of Work to external contractors (defines work activities and deliverables) * Sign off on Contractor quotes whether to proceed or seek more bids * Write technical reports as required
Ideal Candidate
**Required Knowledge:** * Experience in drafting design tools * Knowledge of accepted engineering standards and practices to provision the network * Detailed engineering knowledge of a suite of design systems and tools including SAP, CET, AutoCad, SpatialNet * Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) **Required Skills & Abilities:** * Demonstrated ability to produce designs based on sound engineering economic analysis and following guidelines established by network standards * Demonstrated ability in planning and organizing to meet scheduled deadlines * Strong verbal and written communications skills * Ability to effectively interact with external customers * Ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaboratively with other departments * Negotiating skills * Conflict management experience/skills * Must be willing to work in locations that preclude your ability to return home every day, on an as required basis **Required Professional Designation/Certification:** Degree in Computer Science or Engineering or Minimum of 3+ years of relevant experience **Required Experience:** * Working knowledge of municipal and civil policies and procedures * Knowledge of outside plant analog and digital technologies * Knowledge of engineering processes and regulatory policies in use * Familiarity with project management methodologies
