Packaging & Containers Phoenix, Arizona Public Corporation

Our Company

Mobile Mini, or Mobile Mini Storage Systems as it was first called, was founded in 1983, and start by selling storage containers to construction companies and manufacturers. By 1986, the company had started expanding into greater markets along the west coast, such as Tucson and Los Angeles. The 90s continued to be a period of expansion for Mobile Mini and a period of innovation. Due to the shortage of cargo storage containers available, Bunger decided to start manufacturing containers at our Phoenix location, along with developing other containers, such as the MM and the SJ, named for his daughter Jenny. The early 90s also saw the development of the first “bi-cam locking system,” a predecessor to Mobile Mini’s patented Tri-cam Locking System, providing better security than most storage containers. As manufacturing facilities grew to accommodate new product lines and innovations, so did the scope of what Mobile Mini could produce. With larger facilities, we were able to start building modular classrooms for our Arizona and New Mexico markets. In addition to these innovations and changes, Mobile Mini experienced huge growth into new markets in Texas, including Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, along with completing our first acquisitions in 1998, in Las Vegas and Oklahoma City. Seeing the growth of our company and where the moving and storage industry was moving, Steve Bunger, along with then CFO Larry Trachtenberg, decided to change the business model from more of a sales and manufacturing company, to a leasing and marketing company. The 2000s proved to be no different or less fortuitous for Mobile Mini. Our company experienced phenomenal growth by diversifying our customer base and offering a wider product line. We began the decade by designing our Tri-Cam Locking System, our patented security system that helps us provide our customers with the best security in the moving and storage industry. In terms of growth, we experienced our first large acquisition, purchasing National Storage Containers for $25 million, followed by our purchase of GE’s east coast rental fleet, putting Mobile Mini on the map as a national company. Following in 2004, we expanded into the UK with the acquisition of Royal Wolf, making us a global corporation. In 2008, our company experienced a transformational merger with The Mobile Storage Group, giving us a combined rental fleet of more than 274,000 units. The 2000's also saw Mobile Mini mature as a company, not only in the way we do business, but our culture as well. In light of the great Recession of 2009-2010, Mobile Mini decided to move to a hybrid sales model to better meet our needs as well as the needs of our customers. When new leadership came aboard in 2013, they reviewed the company culture and made some changes to focus on the pieces important to the future of the company. We’ve developed five values that define Mobile Mini, which will guide our company into the future as we continue to provide businesses and families with convenient, worry-free storage solutions. Our first value is “safety first” as we take responsibility for our own safety and for the safety of those around us. In addition, we strive for integrity and transparency, empowerment of our people, driving results, continuous improvement and being actively involved in the community.
