Product Designer
Alation
(Redwood City, California)Alation was founded in 2012 when PhD engineers from Google, a designer from Apple, and an executive from Oracle teamed up to help people to connect with the data they need.
You will...
- Work on all aspects of design, from user research, to wireframing, all the way to visual design (you don't need to be an expert on everything, but a desire to learn is greatly appreciated!)
- Take loosely-defined concepts and turn them into specs, mocks, and prototypes of delightful experiences for our product
- See your ideas become real products, shipped to customers like eBay, and Square, and many others that you know and love that we can’t reveal quite yet—join us to find out ;-)
-
Work together
- with the rest of the Design team to get feedback, and collaboratively raise the bar for design
- with Engineering to produce delightful, simple, and beautiful experiences (even for tasks which might be arduous and complicated today)
- with Marketing, Sales, and the rest of the company to understand users at the start of the design process, and to communicate what we’ve built to them on the other end
- Work on a small design team to create a culture of insanely great design for years to come!
About you (requirements)
- You have 3-5 years previous design experience, AND/OR have amazing side projects which you’re passionate about (You’ve designed an awesome twist on Space Invaders? Let’s see it! Also, let’s play it at one of our weekly all-company TGIFs!!).
- You’re a generalist. Or aspire to be one. You love seeing a project from ideation all the way to pixel-perfect (for lack of a better phrase in the age of Retina...) completion. Once again, you don't need to be an expert on everything, but you should love to learn and grow in areas that are new or unfamiliar to you.
- You’re humble. You love taking feedback from anyone, no matter who says it.
- You’re curious and flexible. You love learning from and working with other departments in order to spread the good word of design throughout the company!
- You’ve read this entire posting and you’ve put a link to a gif of a puppy or kitten (your pick) doing something cute in your cover letter (we’re not into trick questions, but great design requires reading the requirements to deeply understand users)
- You go through life constantly deconstructing and evaluating designs around you, from your chair, to your microwave, to your email client, to your neighborhood. You learn from the good ones, redesign the bad ones in your head, and are always asking “why?”
- If you know HTML/CSS/JavaScript, you’ll be especially kick-butt at Alation (we won’t make you code—don’t worry—but you’ll be better able to prototype and communicate with engineers)
- You’re familiar with tools like Sketch, Keynote, Framer, InVision, or another cool one we haven’t found yet!
