Summary

Strategen Consulting is looking for management consultants to join our team. These positions require a strong track record in corporate strategy and project management, with experience working on all stages of strategy-based and analytical projects. The positions are based in Berkeley, California.

Analysts and Associates are expected to have strong client management skills, working closely with clients to identify, clarify, and resolve complex issues critical to their strategic and operational success. Associate level positions are generally experienced hires, with several years of work experience and preferably with a graduate degree as well. Associate level positions are generally entry level hires; a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and strong interest and knowledge of the power sector is required.

Responsibilities
  • Analysts and Associates are expected to perform the following tasks within the firm. All of the below job functions are important components of the role, but the majority of our analysts’ and associates’ time will focus on our consulting practice.
  • Project Management: Analysts and Associates will assist our senior team in developing, scoping, bidding, and managing significant client projects from start to finish, proactively communicating progress and deliverables to the broader Strategen team.
  • Financial analysis and quantitative modeling: Analysts and Associates develop, structure and operate models to understand the economics of different strategies and business models, and the value proposition/economics of clean energy technologies in various retail and wholesale energy markets. A thorough understanding of Strategen’s internally developed economic models as well as third party software models is required for analysts and associates. Producing ad hoc, well-organized and substantiated analytical tools for specific client work may also be required. The primary focus will be on solar, wind, fuel cells, energy storage and microgrids.
  • Business Development: Analysts and Associates are expected to assist senior staff in developing new business proposals on a regular basis.
  • Client Relationships: Analysts and Associates will be required to build trusted relationships with Strategen clients and may be asked to present findings to clients in formal and informal settings.
  • Presentations: Analysts and Associates should be fully capable of synthesizing a diverse range of information to develop energy-related PowerPoint presentations for senior staff public presentations. Such presentations can include keynote addresses as well as detailed workshops where attendee learning is emphasized. Analysts and Associates will manage the development, finalization, and delivery of high quality presentations and reports with increasing independence over time.
  • Market research: Analysts and Associates support the team by developing and executing qualitative and quantitative market analysis to understand market trends and companyspecific information.
  • Policy Support: Analysts and Associates are expected to support Strategen’s advocacy work via CESA. Analysts and Associates should be capable of supporting policy and advocacy tasks enabling senior staff to develop and craft CESA positions and comments for proceedings at the CPUC, CAISO, CEC, FERC, and other regulatory and policy-making bodies. These tasks include market research, financial analysis, and developing stakeholder comments and presentations.
  • Basic Office Support: All team members contribute to the office running smoothly, and must be willing and able to assist the team in resolving general issues that may arise with websites, phones, printers, and other basic office IT systems as necessary.
  • Firm building: Strategen is a small but growing team, and each member contributes to the development of the company. Roles here can include marketing support, recruiting, website development, professional development, and more.
Ideal Candidate
  • For Associates, 2-4 years of work experience in energy sector consulting, analytical, and/or customer facing roles in the energy industry is a must, with a history of progressive promotion.
  • For Analysts, demonstrated interest and relevant knowledge and educational experience in the energy industry is required.
  • Strong financial analysis and modeling skills. Deep knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including macro writing capabilities, is a must. Knowledge of Analytica and/or Plexos is desired.
  • Demonstrated interest and knowledge of clean energy and new grid technologies.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly communicate complex concepts and information in a simple manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact independently up and down the organization and with clients. A mature professional demeanor is a must.
  • Strong time management and self-prioritization skills are required.
  • Excellent presentation skills are a requirement. Experience with public speaking is a plus.
  • Exceptional command of business-level English (speaking and writing) is a requirement.
  • A strong sense of cultural awareness is required; experience working with international clients is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrable skills in MS Word and PowerPoint is required.
  • Undergraduate degree from top-tier institution is required for Analysts; a relevant graduate degree from a top-tier institution is a significant plus for Associates.
