About Oblong
Oblong Industries is transforming the way people work, create, and collaborate with Mezzanine™, our radically innovative, immersive technology that is changing the face of computing. Mezzanine is the only product that truly enables rich, real time collaborative work between users situated in the same room or across distances.
Summary
Our Director of Development role is an opportunity to lead the team behind a lot of that magic. We call it the “native” Mezzanine development team because the code is, loosely speaking, close to the metal; there’s a ton of C/C++ and OpenGL, a homebrew p2p distributed mesh that can keep dozens of active users in sync, a p2p presence layer, video streaming servers (and clients), a webrtc client, system configuration and hardening scripts, application update logic and the list goes on. In short, this is a team with a broad scope and a diverse skill set. An effective leader will possess many skills: leadership and coaching are key but so is a penchant for software architecture, test driven development, experience with large codebases and a there-are-no-mysteries-in-software attitude. Very little of what this team does is cookie-cutter build-test-ship; in fact, much of the work is new and without a lot of precedent. So, this job is also an opportunity to test your unremitting passion for quality against new problems.
Responsibilities
* Be a fantastic coach for a highly motivated engineering team * Help the team articulate and drive a shared technical vision that will guide our core engineering efforts * Provide strong technical leadership: evangelize engineering best practices, develop and maintain an intimate technical understanding of the areas under your supervision, and be ultimately responsible for the quality of the work produced by your team * Hands on involvement: Spend enough of your time in active development to stay technical
Ideal Candidate
* 10+ years of experience delivering software products at world class organizations * Experience leading and growing teams of 10 or more people * Deep technical understanding of areas you have been working on and a willingness to learn about new areas such as real-time rendering, distributed systems, concurrency and networking * Excellent interpersonal skills * Good verbal and written communication skills
