Our Company

MTA New York City Transit is the largest agency in the MTA service family, responsible for bus and subway operations within the five boroughs. The agency, which is a state agency, employs nearly 47,000 people working to provide 24-hour bus and subway service to seven million daily riders. With 26 subway routes in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Bronx, including Staten Island Railroad, all of which are interconnected, MTA New York City Transit boasts a yearly ridership of over 1 billion. The agency also has the largest bus fleet in North America, with more than 4,500 buses operating on more than 200 routes. The bus fleet is also 100% equipped for wheelchair accessibility. The system is primarily navigated using a MetroCard, a credit-card sized slip of plastic with a magnetic strip that records payment at turnstiles and fare boxes on both subways and buses.
