Summary
This position is for the design, implementation and operational support of the data communications infrastructure used to support Grainger’s business objectives. The position also ensures maximum availability, reliability, and performance of the infrastructure, systems and network-related applications. A Network Engineer is required to possess knowledge of Wide Area Network (WAN) and Local Area Network (LAN) concepts, and related hardware and software. Candidates must be familiar with WAN technologies such as MPLS, SONET, T1, DS3, DWDM and Ethernet, and should exhibit a strong understanding of LAN concepts such as trunking, spanning tree, and layer 2 and layer 3 switching, virtual port channels, and virtual switching. An understanding of distributed systems management techniques and a solid understanding of change and problem management concepts is required, along with the ability to resolve complex problems, utilizing diagnostics and debugging.
Responsibilities
* Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, designing and implementing flexible, cost effective networks for business-related projects to meet business and customer service levels and expectations, and working with technologies such as DNS/DHCP (Infoblox), routing, switching, layer 4-7 load balancers (F5), wireless networks (controller based), network management platforms (Cisco Prime), network protocols TCP, UDP, and IP, wireless security, and multicast. * Additional responsibilities include defining and implementing standards and performance requirements to maximize reliability, functionality, and integrity while minimizing costs and cycle time for both business-related projects and infrastructure build-out, performing packet captures and decoding using Netscout or Wireshark, and IPv4 addressing and sub-netting using RFC1719.
Ideal Candidate
* 3+ years of experience in network solution design, implementation, and troubleshooting. * 5 or more years required of combined IT and network experience with a broad exposure to infrastructure/network and multi-platform environments. * Must be proficient in Cisco IOS and NX-OS configuration and troubleshooting. * Experience with F5 load balancer design, implementation and troubleshooting. * Ability to determine, evaluate and diagnose call routing and performance problems. * Background in protocols/codecs to include TCP/IP, EIGRP, BGP, MPLS, RTP, RTCP, VRRP, ANSI, ETSI, SS7 (ISUP & TCAP), IPDC, MGCP, H.323, SIP, G.711 and G.729 * Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate to various levels of management. * Strong documentation skills, utilizing tools such as Excel, Visio, and SharePoint, for documenting network designs, implementation, and transitional support that includes monitoring, * Strong understanding of network management tools. * Solid understanding of standard business processes including change management, problem management, work prioritization, quality assurance and continuous improvement best practices. * A good understanding and working knowledge of UNIX skills is a plus. * Any of the following are highly preferred: CCNP, CCDP, or CCIE routing and switching * Ability to work on cross-functional teams.
