Summary
Responsible for the efficient operation of the flour and corn mill units during a shift. Responsible to meet yield targets and production goals while maintaining a quality end product. Miller is the shift foreman or first line supervisor for his/her particular shift. Miller helps direct Mill Attendant/Spouter activities and ensure those particular activities and duties are being accomplished. Miller coordinates mill activities with appropriate departments and leadership. Ensures compliance with safety, record keeping, inventory management, sanitation duties and quality performance. The Miller is the key person in the economic success of the mill operation. Must be completely knowledgeable about the operation and able to fine tune the process not only to obtain the maximum flour extraction, but also to obtain the optimum capacity to maximize production.
Responsibilities
* Continuously supervises the milling operations throughout the shift. * Plan, direct and execute the daily shift milling duties for the shift crew to perform the necessary tasks to operate both mills efficiently. * Check break roll extractions daily. Analyze and record results and make necessary adjustments to keep mill balance in check. * Observe operation of all rolls continuously and assure stocks are properly distributed across the entire length of the rolls and roll gaps and brushes are set to maximize grinding efficiency. * Adjust purifier settings to optimize mill performance, by making qualitative observations of various stocks to subsequent roll passages to optimize mill performance. * Evaluate sifter performance, checking for any sieve issues that may affect flour color & ash. * Evaluate Rebolt tailings on a regular basis. Analyze and record findings. * Analyze bran and shorts streams continuously to monitor mill efficiency with regards to cleaning up these co-products. * Work closely with and direct spouter to maintain proper wheat temper and help monitor cleaning house equipment performance. * Coordinate with QA to keep ash and other end specifications on target. * Coordinate with spouters on shift to insure all sanitation functions are being completed. * Work closely with team to ensure all Safety procedures are being followed during the shift. * Ensures documentation is carried out for the various points of the operation as needed. * During scheduled mill downtime, the miller leads the team with the various repair needs to be accomplished. Miller can participate in roll changes, sifter work, auxiliary equipment maintenance, etc, etc…. * Performs various lab analysis with the NIR instrument in the QA lab to monitor finished product quality. * Utilizes various shift production reports which includes information related to the break release settings during the shift, midds bin measurements, roll line shaft amp readings, etc. Documents and summarizes all scale readings during the shift. * Documents yield and throughput data hourly among other things. * Miller decides upon emergency maintenance needs to open a sifter section to check for issues. If major mechanical problems, uses authority to shut down the mill. * React to abrupt changes in mill temperature and relative humidity. * Free chokes in the mill with the mill crew. * Performs other duties as assigned. i.e. confined space trained for filter sock changes.
Ideal Candidate
**Experience/Education/Certifications:** * Six months to one year related experience and/or training and/or Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or; or equivalent combination of education and experience. * Desired: 1-2 years grain milling experience or a degree in Milling Science or related field desired **Training:** Daily routine and start-up procedures for oversight and operation of the milling and elevator operations. Key points of maintaining sifter sieves and rolls including replacement of necessary equipment. Repair and replacement of gudgeons and bearings. Preparing belts for roll stand drives and roll feeder gate and replacement of belts on elevator legs. Know and understand mill stream flow and functions of the elevators as both relates to the other plant operations. On the Job Training up to 2 months **Physical Demands:** Must be able to stand, walk, sit, talk, hear, and use hands and finger dexterity for touch or feel over 2/3 of the time. Reach with hands arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch 1/3 or more of the time. Must utilize taste or smell less than 1/3 of the time. May be required to lift up to 50 lbs 1/3 or less of the time. Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships) and the ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus) are required. **Work Environment:** Must be able to work near moving mechanical parts over 2/3 of the time and in non-weather hot and/or humid indoor conditions based on seasonal climate possibly in high or precarious places with slight subjection to vibrations depending on tasks. Outside of office work noise level exposure varies from moderately loud to very loud above 85 dB TWA requiring hearing protection. **Personal Protection:** Hearing protection, bound leather shoes and uniforms are required.
