Head of Product Design

Betterment is a smart automated investing service that provides optimized investment returns for individual, IRA, ROTH IRA, and rollover 401(k) accounts. Its technology enables users to manage their investments in a customized, diversified portfolio. Charging a management fee of 0.25%, the company’s mobile app enables users to access, view, share, and review their portfolio’s activities as well as deposit and withdraw money from anywhere, anytime.

You live on the internet and act as an ambassador by making a jungle of information beautiful and approachable. You are passionate about creating great user experiences on everything from the web to mobile devices. You’re a motivated, driven idea person who is excited to shape Betterment’s long-term design and user experience alongside engineers and product managers. You lead by example with high integrity, principles, and ethics. You have exceptional critical problem-solving and strategic-planning skills. You work to unite your team to deliver a clear and coherent vision and are able to develop a plan to achieve your goals.

* Own strategic planning of design initiatives and early adoption of design practices across the software development and marketing production life cycles * Guide the team to develop best practices for ensuring a high bar of quality and design consistency across platforms * Synthesize competitor offerings, customer feedback, site metrics and usability reports into user-centered vision for Betterment’s design * Advocate and be the voice of the customer * Manage resources and capacity of the design team, including budget and hiring pipeline * Collaborate cross-functionally with product, engineering, marketing and other internal teams to ensure a smooth product development process * Manage, mentor, and grow the team of product designers –this includes setting clear goals, managing projects allocation, meeting deadlines and setting up the team for continued success * Manage a team of 6+ designers

We are seeking candidates who exhibit as strong desire to work in a startup environment and record of high achievement. Successful candidates will have: * 10+ years in design/UX experience with at least 4 years in a management or leadership role on a design team * Must have experience and expertise in iOS, Android, and Web design principles and guidelines * Demonstrated experience with customer research, usability testing, and data * Proven track record driving, protecting, and executing brand strategy * Experience working with user-centered design processes * Entrepreneurial spirit; thrives in a rapid growth environment * Experience scaling a team, or experience at a growth stage startup * Familiarity with analytics and market-driven decision making to ensure user acquisition * Passion about what you do and an obsession with staying on top of UX / UI trends and tools * Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken
