Summary
A wise front-end designer once said, ‘Somewhere between design – a world of personas, pixels, and polish – and engineering – a world of logic, loops, and linux – lies frontend design. Frontend design involves creating the HTML, CSS, and presentational JavaScript code that makes up a user interface.’ * At Betterment, you’ll be working with other people who are passionate about this type of work. You’ll contribute directly to projects that help us grow our customer base, build our brand, and improve our customers’ financial lives.
Responsibilities
* Balance strong software-development and design skills to support growth & acquisition initiatives * Work with visual designers to implement mockups with a high degree of visual accuracy. This involves organizing information practically using semantic markup, writing good CSS * Create visualizations of data and interactive web applications that help explain what we do and answer common customer questions * Communicate complex subjects in an easy to understand, visual, delightful way * Maintain a level of polish in your work and build for both delight and improved usability * Collaborate with content and data teams to find interesting stories in data * Interact with people across the whole organization to figure out the problems we want to solve
Ideal Candidate
**About the right team member** * You are interested in bridging the important middle ground between pure visual design and full-stack engineering * You have an eye for aesthetics. You know that clean and transparent is better than cluttered and dense * You know that small, incremental changes can lead to big potential gains. You’ve seen that optimization is the key to successful growth * You believe that showing is better than telling. You can use animation and interactivity to tell a story better than with words * You’re curious about user behavior. Why do users choose one product over another? How can we tell the right story to influence their choice? How can we use user data to inform our decisions? * You think about performance. You know that writing efficient markup, CSS, and javascript is an easy win * You know how valuable a style guide is, and you have opinions on what makes one successful * You come to the table with ideas for tools with impact that you’re excited to build * You’re excited when you hear we don’t support IE8. Or even IE9 * You’re excited about having a direct impact on the growth of the largest independent robo-advisor **Requirements** * Expert HTML and CSS skills * Strong background in Adobe creative suite or Sketch * SASS, D3, CSS animations, client side javascript * Working knowledge of WordPress or other templating system * Familiarity with Git or other version control system * Knowledge of responsive design techniques * Work onsite at our NYC HQ **Bonus points** * Experience with frameworks like Backbone or Angular * HTML email experience (unfortunately we all have to send emails) * You’ve built tools to solve your own pain points * Understanding of split testing theory * Experience implementing data visualizations * Familiarity with Rails or other full-stack frameworks * You have a cute dog you can bring to the office * You’re familiar with Brad Frost’s work.
