Summary
The Environmental Specialist has primary responsibility for the oversight and management of the Company’s waste management program (hazardous waste, non-hazardous waste, waste minimization, waste transportation, disposal facilities), as well as complex technical work in a wide range of environmental disciplines to achieve compliance with the Company’s policies, as well as federal and state regulations. The Environmental Specialist will also be supporting other environmental regulatory programs and/or department needs, as needed.
Responsibilities
* Maintains expert knowledge of federal, state and local waste regulations. * Acts as the lead technical expert providing functional direction and training in one or more environmental subjects. * Works under consultative supervision toward predetermined objectives and assignments are usually self-initiated. * Ensures that stations comply with annual and/or biennial reporting, as applicable. * Conducts comprehensive, independent compliance audits of environmental policies and procedures. * Represents American Airlines during official inspections. * Prepares reports and recommends corrective action. * Develops environmental procedures, employee training, emergency preparedness plans and quality assurance programs. * Provides regulatory interpretations and technical advice. * Recommends improvements in processes and procedures to minimize company liabilities. * Supports other environmental regulatory programs and/or department needs, as needed.
Ideal Candidate
* Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, science, or related discipline; or five years of related job experience required. * Master’s degree in Environmental Science is preferred. * Must be familiar with federal and state environmental regulations. * Prior project management experience is a plus. * Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously. * Ability to meet deadlines and work under fast-paced, time-constraining circumstances is essential. * Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to work independently exercising good judgment and decision-making skills. * Must be able to effectively and confidently communicate with representatives from regulatory agencies. * Must be willing to travel overnight, approximately 60% to 80% of the time.
