Summary
Instructs children in developmentally appropriate activities designed to promote social, physical, and intellectual growth in accordance with YWCA mission and DHS regulations in an outdoor camp environment. The hours for the Camp Counselors vary between 6:30 am and 6 pm, Monday through Friday. Flexibility in scheduling may be necessary.
Responsibilities
* Coordinate daily activities for assigned group as well as weekly Camper’s Choice group. * Maintain lesson plans aligned with camp themes and curriculum. * Plan individual and group activities to stimulate growth in language, social, and motor skills such as learning to listen to instructions, playing with others, and using play equipment in accordance with the policies and the philosophy of the YWCA. Use developmentally appropriate practices consistent with the expectations of National After School Association (NAA). * Participate with and supervise children at all times. * Alternate periods of strenuous activity with periods of rest or light activity to avoid over stimulation and fatigue. * Conduct a daily health check of each child; instructs children in practices of personal cleanliness, dressing, and self care. * Help children develop habits of caring for own clothing and belongings and picking up and putting away toys and supplies. * Provide children with experiences, which build self-esteem, encourage self-reliance, and help each child to function cooperatively in a group. * Provide children with experiences, which build a sense of curiosity, an appreciation of the natural world, and respect for the environment around us. * Confer with and maintain a positive relationship with parents, and communicate necessary information in a professional manner. * Confer with and maintain a positive relationship with other staff members, and communicate necessary information in a professional manner. * Serve meals and refreshments to children under CACFP regulations. * Submit timely reports, timesheets and statistics. * Keep camp environment interesting, safe and clean. Report maintenance and safety concerns to Director, as needed. * Perform general housekeeping tasks. * Attend parent meetings, special events, and all staff meetings. * Maintain a high level of job integrity and professionalism while adhering to ethical code of conduct. * Maintain personal cleanliness, including washing hands after toilet, nose wiping and before preparing and/or serving lunches and snacks. * Maintain professional growth in accordance to high quality standards. * Other duties as assigned.
Ideal Candidate
**Qualifications:** * A high school diploma or a general educational development certificate * Ability to provide documented 2500 hours of child care experience - Must be at least 18 years old. - A camp counselor shall have attained the following qualification levels: - Preference given to college students studying in the education field and with individuals who have experience in working with children, and persons who have or are willing to obtain Lifeguard certification. - Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. **Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:** * Complete Fire Safety Training annually. * Complete Emergency Safety Training annually. * Complete Food Program Training annually. * Complete Water Safety Training annually. * Maintain current CPR and First Aid certification. * Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. * Work well with staff and volunteers. * Work scheduled hours everyday. **Competencies:** * Shows respect and sensitivity for cultural differences. - Treats people with respect; Works with integrity and ethically; upholds organizational values. * Approaches others in a tactful manner; Reacts well under pressure; treats others with respect and consideration regardless of their status or position. * Observes safety and security procedures. * Adapts to changes in the work environment. **Physical Requirements:** * Ability to lift, push, and/or pull up to 50 pounds. * Standing for long periods of time. * May require driving in inclement weather. * Ability to be outdoors for long periods of time, in a summer setting. * Ability to be physically active with campers, i.e. hiking, outdoor games, canoeing.
