Responsibilities
You’re passionate about building systems at scale, and enjoy engineering them to the point where they run super smoothly. When people are brainstorming ideas, you’re already thinking about solutions. You have great fun pushing a system to its performance limits, but plan for not needing that in practice. You love working in a team, your closest coworkers and project stakeholders just the same. If that sounds like you, we’d like to hear from you! The Wikimedia Foundation is looking for an experienced Operations Engineer to join our Technical Operations team. In this role, you will contribute to an open source based infrastructure serving more than 500 million people every month. Description - Work in a globally distributed team to keep Wikimedia’s sites & services available for all users - Investigation, architectural design, and implementation of Wikimedia infrastructure and services - Improve automation tools and processes to support development, deployment and maintenance - Emergency incident response and diagnosis of system outages or alerts - Write and update internal documentation of systems and processes
Ideal Candidate
**Requirements** - 3+ years experience in an Operations/DevOps role as part of a team - Experience with configuration management systems, orchestration systems and concepts (ex: puppet, chef, salt, ansible, etc.) - Comfort with a variety of scripting languages used in operations engineering (e.g. Python, Perl, Ruby) - You are very familiar with Linux/Unix operating system internals - Prior exposure to distributed systems and architectures, high availability setups - Hands-on experience with significant scale web site infrastructure architecture, including caching layers (Varnish/Squid, HTTP caching, load balancing), with strong focus on open source stacks - Experience with the use, maintenance and configuration of monitoring and metrics infrastructure (Graphite, Ganglia, icinga, etc.) - Experience with package management (e.g. Debian, RPM) - Experience with core infrastructure components (DNS, e-mail, LDAP, etc.) - Excellent written and oral English skills - B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or equivalent work experience - Candidate must be willing to travel for team meetings and other events from time to time. **Pluses** - Familiarity with network engineering (device setup, VLANs, BGP/OSPF routing, high availability protocols) is a plus - Strong track record of open source contributions is a major plus - Experience with highly geographically distributed teams and follow-the-sun operations is preferred. Personal cross-cultural experience (having lived, worked internationally) helps as well.
