About Whitney Museum of American Art

The Whitney Museum of American Art houses one of the world's foremost collections of modern and contemporary American art.

Responsibilities
  • A full-time position is available in the Graphic Design Department for a graphic designer. The Graphic Design department develops and maintains the Whitney's brand and graphic identity.
  • Through the various materials that are produced with the institution's graphic language (including advertising, promotional materials, signage, invitations, branded merchandise, mass mailings, publications, as well as whitney.org and other multimedia initiatives), this department both communicates the Museum's positioning while continually serving to distinguish the Whitney within the cultural landscape of New York and beyond.
  • Outside of the Whitney's institutional voice, the designers also work closely with the curatorial department to create bespoke wall graphics and ephemera materials for all exhibitions and performances.
  • Conceptualize, develop, and execute graphic design for digital, print, and environmental applications including the various materials produced with the institution's graphic language (advertising, promotional materials, signage, invitations, branded merchandise, mass mailings, publications, whitney.org, and other multimedia initiatives).
  • Work in close collaboration with colleagues from all Museum departments, while under the supervision of the Director of Graphic Design, and within the language of the Whitney’s graphic identity.
  • Outside of the Whitney's institutional voice, the graphic designers also work closely with the curatorial department to create bespoke wall graphics and ephemera materials for all exhibitions and performances.
  • Act as liaison with outside vendors as needed
Ideal Candidate
  • B.F.A. in design with 3+ years of professional design experience; or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Strong client-facing communication and project management skills; strong typographic ability; strong attention to detail
  • Experience managing commercial print production
  • Knowledge of 20th-century American art/contemporary art
  • Experience with UX design for web and mobile applications desirable
  • Technical Skills: Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite required; familiarity with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as some animation experience preferred.
