Summary
When I Work is seeking to hire a game-changing and proven technology executive who will manage a talented team through an extreme growth phase. Reporting to the CEO, this executive will be responsible for building a team to help When I Work become the hourly workforce’s most trusted ally on the job, off the job and between jobs. S/he will manage and mentor a team consisting of engineering professionals focused on scaling and driving innovation around performance, network growth effects, personalization and innovative new features supporting the When I Work’s mission to make work less work for the hourly workforce. When I Work is positioned as a market leader whose compelling business model has found a new market in the workforce management space, and requires a leader who can both build a world class organization and maintain a highly performing application and platform. The successful VP of Engineering will be passionate both about front-end feature development and performance as well as backend API, data, and customer service systems that will enable When I Work to deliver an unprecedented customer experience. S/he must build a team that can release new features and products for When I Work quickly and convert When I Work into a platform that can expand into areas that we may not be in today.
Responsibilities
* The VP of Engineering will be responsible for leading all aspects of the When I Work’s Engineering team, which currently is comprised of full-stack, mobile, front-end, infrastructure, tech ops and site operations. * This will be a bright executive who has led and grown teams with experience tackling highly complex architecture and infrastructure problems in a B2B and consumer-facing environment. * This executive should be steeped in introducing best practices and process around product management, product selection, quality assurance, project management and engineering development. * The new technology leader will be responsible for providing engineering execution excellence as well as technical vision and direction to ensure the product organization is aligned with the strategy of the company, and that the group is capable of constant iteration and testing. * The goal is to ensure that wise product and technical investment decisions are made for site architecture and scalability, and as well as front-end product that will attract traffic, spark conversion, and increase loyalty. * The ideal candidate will have proven leadership and technology general management experience with both a product focused team as well as an executive team, and have previously built robust, scalable platforms that allow for a team to rapidly innovate. * The VP of Engineering should be well versed and have tenured experience to provide execution and product planning and continue to foster the growth of a highly scalable and mission critical environment. * Additionally, he/she should be well versed in the following areas: web infrastructure, architecture design, internal tools, application support, mobile and database systems. * The VP of Engineering will be responsible for bringing vision, energy, passion, commitment and high quality of management to this fast-paced environment. * This will require strong leadership capabilities, as well as a roll-up-your sleeves / hands on mentality. * Most important, this executive must be able to collaborate with all members of the executive team to translate the business priorities of the company into a technical agenda and be an excellent communicator between the business and the tech team. * This role includes challenging opportunities for development of complex platform solutions that seek to solve broad and looming problems in the hourly workforce. * New additions to our platform should be simple to use and easy to understand. As the platform grows, and continues to connect with every hourly worker, When I Work hopes to develop unique IP and services that will transform the platform into a valuable asset in itself. * There are also unique pricing analyses that can be done to maximize revenue from our existing platform. * All of these key business aspects have potential to generate key revenue for the company and the technology team is essential to making this possible. * In order to increase business profitability and growth, critical initiatives will include further developing technologies around analytics, modeling, optimization and personalization.
Ideal Candidate
* Minimum of 15 years of progressive technology leadership experience with a collaborative management style and significant executive presence * Experience with security and policy requirements for software and infrastructure, as they related to PII, PHI, HIPAA, etc. * Previous experience as either a CTO or CIO or VP of Engineering * Experience leading the technology related strategic decisions, definition and implementation of software product development based upon the ability to identify, anticipate and exploit emerging technology trends in pursuit of the When I Work’s overall goals and vision * Experience deploying applications and managing the operations of such systems with an emphasis on client service and client satisfaction * Experience operating a mission-critical technology environment while maintaining a culture of innovation, entrepreneurship and productivity * Fluent in hands-on management of agile, iterative development spanning specification, prototyping, architecture, QA, operations and support * Fluent in determining KPIs that allows agile teams to iterate to meet measurable goals * Familiar with using web analytics from A/B testing in order to optimize solutions to drive revenue * Familiar with the technology and business models of e-commerce, consumer sites, and social networking * Track record of high quality, innovative products that delight users and achieve business results; passionate for high impact user experiences * Strong, visionary leader and strategic business partner with a passion for technology and customer service * Excellent leadership, communication and presentation skills, both written and oral * Strong people management skills with proven success in motivating, mentoring and creating an environment where the best talent wants to be **Education** **The ideal candidate will have:** * BS/BA in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering * MBA desirable * MS in Computer Science or Computer Engineering viewed as beneficial **About You** * Passionate, organized, smart, engaging, driven and technically savvy * Able to establish mutual respect and a collaborative working relationship with their peers and team * Must be able to implement strong process in the engineering organization, specifically around prioritization, quality assurance, project management, and development * Must be personally committed to When I Work, its customers and drive the organization through technical growth * Ability to set a very high bar and stretch goals, clearly communicate those goals and then infuse and inspire the team with a sense of purpose and urgency in attainment of those goals * Flexible, able to adjust to and change direction as the business environment and technology universe evolves and changes * Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with all kinds of people at all levels inside and outside the organization * Ability to work through conflict, gain trust and persuasively influence outcomes * Ability to address tactical issues in the short-term while maintaining strategic vision for the long-term * Technically experienced and able to work with the Chief Architect to lead the architecture of the platform, as well as garner the respect of the team and the technology community * Seen as a When I Work Evangelist and leader in tech industry * Embodies When I Work core values and leads by example
