Engineering Manager (Team Lead)

When I Work is an employee scheduling and communication app using the web, mobile apps, text messaging, social media, and email. The program provides a powerful tool for employers to communicate with employees and ensure schedules are properly communicated.

You love technology and really get excited about leading a technical team. You’re still in the code (we do PHP, and Native iOS/Android) but probably not as much as you use to because you love to help enable your team members to do more and become better at what they do. You love to make sure all the trains run on time, any roadblocks are cleared and are constantly looking for ways to make the team and how they deliver products more efficient and predictable.

While you can talk technology and code, you also really enjoy spending your time leading a team, relying on their technical input and watching them produce code and products that are greater than the sum of their parts. You have experience hiring, ideally remotely, knowing when a candidate can raise the bar of the team and when they may not be a match. You also enjoy mentoring other developers through 1on1s, talking about their current challenges and their long and short term goals. You are pro-active and constantly looking for way to improve how your team builds software.

You'll work on everything from hiring to 1on1s, from writing code to writing documents, from helping a Product Manager build the product to helping Support troubleshoot it. Sometimes all in the same day. You won’t be alone on this you will partner with a technical lead that will define the technical directions so you can concentrate on moving the team, features and products forward.

What You’ll Be Doing

• You’ll be working alongside our product development team and support, building apps that make every piece of hourly workforce management - scheduling, time tracking, shift trading and more - easy and straightforward, for managers and employees alike. In addition to leading a team in partnership with a technology lead, you’ll have the opportunity to offer ideas, feedback and perspective on everything we produce. This is our expectation!

Responsibilities include:

• Establishing focus and execution of the team to build new features, and analyzing (and reacting) to the results you discover from our system services and user feedback. We love data and to aid us in making decisions.
• Mentorship and growth of the team members.
• Hiring a world class remote team.
• Constantly evaluating and building engineering processes that helps the team run efficiently and have fun doing it.
• Coding -- you still love to be in the code producing an awesome product.

• Significant real world experience with running the day to day operations of a technical engineering team.
• Strong development experience in PHP or Native iOS/Android platforms. If your development skills are a little rusty cause you’ve been doing a lot of team leadership we’re still interested in talking with you.
• Strong experience building and leading a technical team, ideally remotely. You have helped develop leaders that have developed other leaders.
• Have conducted effective one on one and reviews which both celebrate successes and talk about areas of growth.
