Responsibilities
JOB DESCRIPTION: - Establishes all regular bus routes, schedules, stops, and develops route maps for drivers, schools, etc., as appropriate. - Coordinates student transportation activities with school officials, department heads, law enforcement agencies, and other interested groups and individuals. - Maintains and optimizes transportation fleet routing software. - Conducts parent/student conferences or home visits in an effort to resolve or prevent misconduct and unsafe conditions that involve the transportation system. - Develops school bus specifications that meet the needs of the district, and fully complies with state and federal requirements. - Recommends the procurement of additional or replacement buses and the disposal of old or uneconomically repairable units. - Develops and forecasts transportation department budget requirements, and administers the expenditure of funds as allocated. - Maintains cost accounting records and all data pertaining thereto. - Collects data and develops all required bus transportation-oriented reports and ensures their submission on a timely basis. - Ensures compliance with the Revised Codes of Washington, Washington Administrative Codes, and Superintendent of Public Instruction policies regarding training, licensing, registration, and operational permits. - Drives in emergencies and for special activities as needed. - Recruits and recommends employment, supervises, and evaluates all transportation department personnel. - Plans, develops, implements, and/or conducts bus driver training and safety programs to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal standards. - Supervises general maintenance program with specific attention to safety inspections. - Implements procedures to ensure adequacy of the maintenance phase of the safety program. - Establishes performance standards and supervises operational care, servicing, and maintenance of all vehicles within the department - Performs journeyman level work in the repair, service, and maintenance of school buses and related vehicular equipment. - Conducts accident investigations and supervises accident reporting to appropriate law enforcement and insurance agencies. - Establishes and maintains a positive public relation program designed to promote understanding of and support for the school district transportation program. - Evaluates all elements of the transportation program on a continuing basis. - Conducts a first-hand road inspection during inclement weather by touring bus routes prior to 5 a.m. - Makes recommendations to the Superintendent (before 5 a.m.) during inclement weather as to whether buses shall run on the regular schedule, delayed start, snow routes, or not at all.
Ideal Candidate
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: - Four years experience in the pupil transportation field in an organization having full maintenance and operations facilities, or equivalent experience. - Experience or responsibilities must have included or be related to the following areas: - Supervision of personnel - Routing and scheduling (dispatching) - Bus driver training - Accident investigation - Bus maintenance - Inventory control - Cost accounting/budgeting/records keeping - Preparation of bus specifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: - Post-high school education and/or training, speaks and writes standard English. - Must be at least twenty-one years of age. (WAC 180-20-101) - Possess a valid Washington State School Bus Drivers authorization. - Possess a valid state CDL driver license with the class "B" endorsement. - Meet the physical and mental standards necessary to perform the duties, tasks, and responsibilities of a school bus driver as described in this job description. - Must be knowledgeable of safety standards, laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to pupil transportation. - Must have an extensive working knowledge of gas and diesel mechanics. - Demonstrated ability to compile and analyze statistical data. - Demonstrated organizational skills and commitment to follow through on tasks. - Demonstrated ability to establish cooperative relations with other district staff members, subordinates, students, and patrons. - Demonstrated ability to express oneself in a professional manner both orally and in writing. - Successful experience with computer and software usage. - Flexibility in work hours. - Possesses a valid first-aid card, with an expiration date of at least one year from date of hire. - New-to-the-district employees: Must be finger-printed for a Washington State Patrol and FBI inquiry and Washington State Sexual Misconduct inquiry.

Salary: $62,000 - $68,000

Working Conditions

8 hours per day 5 days per week 260 days per year
