Responsibilities
The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in structural engineering effective August 2016. - The successful candidate will contribute to the Department’s Structural Engineering and Materials (SEM) Program and demonstrate enthusiasm for collaborative and interdisciplinary research. - Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate instruction, specialized graduate education, sponsored research, and scholarly work. The CEE Department is comprised of 55 faculty members, with approximately 350 full-time graduate students and 550 undergraduate students. The Via Endowment allows the Department to offer a significant number of scholarships and fellowships to highly qualified students. - Candidates for this position should have research expertise and/or design experience in the broad areas of civil infrastructure materials and design. - The new faculty member should possess core strength in behavior and design of concrete structures, steel -concrete composite structures and/or new and high performance materials. - Expertise in complementary areas such as infrastructure resiliency, advanced sensing and visualization techniques, multi-scale modelling and advanced computing, wind engineering, extreme load and multi-hazard effects and structural mechanics will be highly desirable. - Candidates are expected to develop strong collaborative and multi-disciplinary research programs and contribute to teaching in the structural design and materials areas at both the undergraduate and graduate level. - Applicants with core strengths in resilient, durable, and sustainable systems are preferred to support ongoing cross-disciplinary collaboration through the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science. Excellent research facilities are available through the Murray Structural Engineering Laboratory and the Advanced Research Computing Center.
Ideal Candidate
- Doctoral degree in civil engineering or a closely related field; - Evidence of scholarship/research and record of external funding for research for consideration of appointment at the Associate Professor level; - Effective communication skills; - Commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship and research - Post-doctoral experience or experience in a faculty position at the university level; - Experience in supervising graduate student research and theses; - Interest and experience working effectively with a diverse student population; - Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with faculty from a variety of disciplines; - Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or completion of the FE examination with plans to pursue PE registration, and professional experience are desirable.
