Responsibilities
- VDOT’s Traffic Engineering Division is seeking an experienced responsible charge engineer to provide senior level support in the delivery of VDOT’s Traffic Signal and Arterial Systems program. - The selected candidate will act as a statewide subject matter expert in traffic signal systems engineering, technology and traffic signal communications technologies; will lead the deployment of advanced communications infrastructure, hardware, software, and related signal system components to support the deployment of new technologies; will support the Traffic Signal and Arterial Systems program with planning, programming, and project development oversight for statewide traffic signal projects. - The selected candidate will also oversee the development of systems engineering assessments, policies and procedures for technology deployment in consideration of VDOT’s vision on transportation mobility, operational efficiency, safety, asset management, regional consistency, and interoperability. - Additionally, the selected candidate will coordinate with Central Office, Regional, and local agency staff in delivering projects and supporting business functions that advance the Traffic Signal and Arterial Systems program.
Ideal Candidate
Minimum Qualifications - Experience with traffic signal communication technologies and infrastructure for implementation, design, deployment, construction management, and-or continuing operations-maintenance. - Experience with testing and deployment of advanced for traffic signal and-or communications systems. - Experience in managing multiple complex and high-profile projects, using knowledge of project management, risk analysis and mitigation plans. - Knowledge of transportation engineering, systems engineering, project management, resource and workload management, construction management and strategic planning principles and techniques. - Knowledge of the concepts of traffic signal systems, arterial system management, automated signal control system operations, and-or related communications-ITS components. - Knowledge of arterial system management, traffic management center operations, traffic signal systems and-or related communications- ITS components. - Knowledge of engineering principles and practices as they relate to traffic engineering, traffic signal operations, traffic control equipment and-or related communication systems. - Knowledge of Federal, State and local laws, codes and ordinances pertaining to traffic control and engineering, including the National ITS Architecture and public sector policies and procedures for technology and procurement. - Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences; to make presentations and conduct meetings; to develop effective working relationships at all organization levels both internal and external to the agency; to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple assignments. - Must have a Professional Engineering License for signatory and decision making purposes relating to applicable traffic signal and arterial systesm engineering products. Preferred Qualifications - BS in Electrical, Industrial Systems, Transportation Systems, or Civil Engineering or related field preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for degree. - Experience in the design, deployment and operation of traffic signals and ITS systems; as well as experience applying systems engineering principles, specific signal technologies, signals specifications and standards, data and telecommunications technologies and standards. - Experience applying engineering principles and practices related to traffic engineering, traffic control equipment and related communication systems. - Experience applying National ITS architecture and public sector policies and procedures for technology and procurement. - Progressively responsible project management, and traffic engineering and transportation planning experience. - Experience applying knowledge of Integrated Corridor Management (ICM), Active Traffic Management, Communications Systems, Traffic Signal Interconnect and Adaptive Traffic Signal Systems concepts. Experience applying knowledge of Federal, State and local laws, codes and ordinances pertaining to traffic control and engineering. - Knowledge and use of complex information and asset management systems, databases, GIS applications, CADD and Microsoft Office. Special Requirement - Professional Engineering License required.
