Summary
The School of Architecture at the University of Minnesota is seeking applications for a new tenure-track Assistant Professor, with a focus on the integration of building construction technology with design. The School of Architecture, located within a multidisciplinary College of Design, is the academic hub of vibrant professional and research communities. Committed to a culturally sensitive, ecologically responsible and technologically rich vision of design, the School has a strong reputation in the areas of design and sustainability. This is exemplified by our Masters of Science in Sustainable Design, our long relationship with the Center for Sustainable Building Research (CSBR), and our commitment to the integration of sustainable design into our M.Arch curriculum. In this context, we promote excellence in pedagogical, professional and research activities. Understanding the potential of each area to stimulate innovation in the others, we seek multi-faceted individuals capable of working collaboratively in this setting. We also seek candidates with the commitment and energy to participate in the intellectual life of the School and College and readiness to teach both graduate and undergraduate required and elective courses and research-based architectural design studios. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to support interdisciplinary initiatives in teaching and research with related fields in the College of Design, across the University, and in collaboration with professional organizations in architecture, engineering, and/or building construction. Responsibilities
**Position** This is a 100%-time academic year (9-month), tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. Anticipated start date is August 29, 2016. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. - Teaching and developing core and elective courses at the undergraduate (B.S.) and graduate levels (M.Arch, M.S.) integrating building technology with design and sustainability. - Building technology expertise should focus on materials and construction practices, with possible additional expertise in digital fabrication, structures, environmental technology, or systems integration. - Research in the area of building technology and/or design, including creative practice and/or obtaining external funding and developing a strong publication or dissemination record, and teaching advanced electives based on research - Advising of graduate students in the completion of Thesis and Final Project work in both the M.Arch and M.S. degree programs - Service at the School, Collegiate and University levels
Ideal Candidate
- M.Arch or B.Arch with advanced degree in architecture or a related field - Teaching experience in architecture or a related field - Scholarship and/or professional experience in design, with demonstrated expertise in building construction technology - Promise of significant achievement in the field through scholarship, professional practice, or a combination thereof - Evidence of ability to integrate building construction practices with design - Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills **Desirable Qualities In addition to the required qualifications:** - Professional experience - Professional licensure - Earned doctorate in architecture or a related field - Experience working collaboratively with others including allied disciplines and professions - Capacity to garner external funding - Experience teaching design studio - Experience teaching building materials and methods courses, with possible additional areas of digital fabrication, structures, and environmental technology - Evidence of attention to cultural diversity in teaching and/or professional practice and the proven ability to support the University’s commitment to equity
