Summary
Provide academic advising to Sixth College students on the college's general-education requirements, UCSD policies and procedures, progress towards graduation, and overall decision-making on academic and career issues. Primary responsibility includes providing in-person/walk-in advising and online advising via the Virtual Advising Center. Provide academic advising and counseling for prospective students. Perform quarterly reviews of academic records to ensure compliance with academic regulations and policies and communicate with students accordingly. Process degree audits and degree checks, including computer input and related procedures.
Responsibilities
As part of Sixth College's advising team, participate in planning, implementation and delivery of freshmen and transfer student orientation presentations and programs. Participate in creation, implementation, delivery and evaluation of programs, workshops and peer advising program. Provide virtual enrollment advising to a caseload of new freshmen and transfer students. Represent Sixth College in campus-wide activities and serve on college and campus-wide committees. Coordination and supervision of main reception area. Hire, train and and provide work direction to student assistants to provide reception and administrative duties for Sixth College.
Ideal Candidate
**Qualification:** * A Bachelor's Degree with one to three years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. * Demonstrated experience in academic counseling in a college advising environment. * Proven experience in counseling and advising techniques, including active listening, interviewing, and referral; and an understanding of their appropriate use in an institutional setting and with a proven knowledge of theories and principles of institutions of higher education. * Experience evaluating academic data and academic records and make decisions or recommendations as appropriate. * Experience analyzing, interpreting, and explaining a variety of college, departmental and campus academic policies and procedures including course articulation. * Proven skills and abilities required in creatively developing, implementing and evaluating general education and curricular programs intended to meet the needs of target populations; with additional ability to organize and conduct meetings, panel discussions, programs and workshops. * Proven skill in using standard office computer technology (including internet technology and web based systems) and campus administrative computing systems, and the willingness and ability to update and maintain those skills as required. * Demonstrated skills and abilities in problem solving and conflict resolution with the ability to exercise sound judgment, tact, cultural sensitivity, and diplomacy. * Strong personal and interpersonal skills with the demonstrated ability to communicate meaningfully and effectively, both in written and oral form, to students, faculty, staff, and parents. * Demonstrated ability to identify issues and information requiring confidentiality along with related University policies, and the ability to maintain that confidentiality. **Preferred:** * Proven ability to use or learn specialized software such as UCSD Blink systems, college undergraduate portal programs including Virtual Advising Center, DARS degree audit, and CMS for Web page development. Ability to analyze and evaluate data rapidly and frequently. * In-depth knowledge of Sixth College, other UCSD colleges, UCSD, and other UC campuses with regard to campus services and academic, educational, vocational and career program opportunities.
